Should we implement Custom Maps in one of the slayboxes?

by CR33D » Sat Mar 02, 2013 5:47 pm

I think that a few custom maps would be nice to see on servers that aren't LN/FunBox. Thoughts?

Would love the change of scenery and chance to play more pl_swiftwater and cp_croissant, but I doubt players on our servers would approve. I remember when tf2maps.net had the dynamic payload map contest, it was a ton of fun going on that server to try out those maps, and some were pretty good.

If you want to try some non-lovenest (i.e. Competetive, not "fun") custom maps try the reddit servers. They have a very nice selection of regular maps and custom maps and a (thus far) decent player base, and generally stay populated even during the custom maps.

It'd be cool if we could have the updated version of a couple of maps. cp_warmfront, pl_barnblitz_pro, maps like that. Some of the more well known customs maps would be nice too.

In a serious response, you have to remember that custom maps require players to download the map to play, which could cause people to leave. With my shitty internet, I know that some maps can take up to five minutes to download. Add on another minute to load on my old shitty laptop I used to play on as a worst case scenario and you've probably got an example of people leaving the server for stock servers.

This.

Back when I was on a shitty connection, I would avoid custom maps like the plague. But now that I've got a much better connection, I can enjoy them. On the other hand, how does Fug's Hovel of Tomfoolery get so many players running only custom maps? Taking a quick glance at that server now, it looks like it has 19/32 players on it.

On a side note, viaduct_pro would also be nice. I really don't like the original version.

Agree with the slow connection issue.

But also u only need to download It once. Then It doesn't matter anymore. I think maybe we could have atleast one map like Manngroove or similar map and try It out and see If ppl really gets annoyed downloading It one time or If they enjoy the service of providing other maps instead of only stock maps. And we can also see and ask how often It Is voted for on map voting. If It's not voted for simply remove It from map rotation again. "Simple for u who understand It, that would not be me. :P"

Please don't. My account got hacked through a trojan that was imbedded in a custom map on a trade server. I no longer allow custom content downloads.

So you never go on pl_swiftwater, koth_viaduct_pro, cp_waste, etc. custom maps that are well known?

Just because a map is popular and well known doesn't mean that there isn't a compromised version out there with the exact same name. There's tons of "index.php" webpages out there in cyberspace and you can't guarantee that none are compromised just because a well-known (e.g., facebook's) one is safe.
