Assuming you're going to create better textures for it in the long run, which it most certainly deserves, it looks pretty darn good.

This is pretty much just a proof of concept here. For my first hat and barely being able to figure everything out, its not too bad.

Facial hair is part of the hat, and I haven't been able to really test it out too much in game. Things I plan on working on:

Better texture
Making sure the hat doesn't conflict with clothing (too much).
Concepts for weapons to tag along (Conquistador themed).

Here's a quick video of the hat.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nq6KzQyeJ9s

Some quick in game pictures:
http://imgur.com/a/EPGza

also, there are a few little things I need to work out as far as the code goes. as of right now his facial hair gets pretty shiny

Assuming the facial hair is too much, which it looks like it might be at this point, here's an alternative idea I've got.

The facial hair is a nice touch, but it's a little off-putting.
The feather, on the other hand, is awesome.
Can you jigglebone it and make it team-colored?

Agreed, though I've hit a bit of a road block with the feather. The way I've got things mirrored is kind of preventing me from having asymmetrical sides. I'll figure something out though. I made a rough draft of it and it looked really cool though.

If there's a way to control the bot's positioning you should try to figure out where clipping occurs. Right now it looks like there's just a little bit but if he looks up or down you might find it clipping in other places. Any luck with jiggly feather bones?

I'm not worried about the clipping. put on the kabuto or another soldier hat and you'll notice clipping there too. Jiggle bones are another story though. right now I'm trying to get my normal map working just to see if it looks good.

Well, youtube is being idiotic and saying "an error occurred" any time I try to load above 360p, but I can still see the normal mapping and it's looking fantastic. I assume the feather is still a work in progress?

I'll give you guys a little inside peak as to what the pattern on his hat looks like w/o the shiny.
Image

Designed it myself. I really like how it turned out. It took me FOREVER to do, but i'm really happy with it. Glad I can give you guys this little insider knowledge ;)

I actually only had to do half of one "square". I was able to do my photoshop magic to create the patern, but that one half of a square alone took me around an hour to touch up.

This is fantastic. The one thing I have issue with is its monochromality (?). I think it just needs a secondary highlight color, maybe making the ornate shapes a darker gray? It's up to you. Also, if it's painted, what would change?

Oh yeah, the texture still needs work, no doubt. I was just updating to show you guys the normal map, which is badass if I do say so myself. I plan on making it look a bit more rustic because right now its just the normal map on top of the blank helmet. Also, I would change the overall tone to match red/blue similar to but not as extreme as the fists of steel.

also, changed the model for the feather, better or worse? Also, snuck in a new texture too! :)

You should definitely post this on /r/tf2 and maybe the steam forums to get more views of it. It's really very polished and great-looking. Also has a good way to distinguish between teams if that feather changes color (also, seeing the feather in higher res I notice it looks actually very good).

I've been cross posting to reddit for about a week now. Some of the changes have come from suggestions from there.

Honestly, I think it's almost done if not done. Added ambient occlusion, accented the normal map, changed the color a little, and for the first time you get to see the blue version.

again, watch in original or highest quality to see what it would look like in game.

The jiggle bones didnt really work out. I tried, but I guess it just dont know enough about them to implement them correctly. All I have to go on is a tutorial with no sound using a program I dont have.

By clipping I assume you're talking about the soldier's collar. It still clips a little. Less so than before, but it's something I find unavoidable. I know I've mentioned this before, but the Killer's Kabuto does the same sort of thing Seen below:Image

And that's even when he's standing upright.
It's actually kind of weird, but the game doesnt always place the hat in the same place, or it's possible it changes the way he stands, because sometimes is a tiny square of clipping, and other times its just as bad as it was before, even though the hat was moved 25 degrees.

I'll also try to record a demo, probably of someone else who has it "on" by chance (it replaces the Spartan helmet). This will let me control the camera a little better and get some cooler shots of the front/sides rather than just the back.
