For people that cannot understand this, the graphics card should never draw more than 75 watts from the motherboard. AMD's newest graphics cards (at stock settings) consistently draw more power than 75 watts. This can kill a computer. Over clocking one of these new AMD cards would certainly put your machine at risk.

Here's more details for those interested:

If you're going to build a rig in the near future that can be over clocked, I wouldn't choose an AMD graphics card.

Thanks for saving me brain cells because I did not understand this graph at all. :)

Do you think AMD rushed the production of these new graphics cards? Or were they a bit too lazy to check how much power their cards drew? Either way. Balu is right. They FUCKED up big time. I can't believe that they would make such a silly and stupid mistake. But hey, it is AMD.

Now lets see if they step up, partner with a manufacturer and come out with their own line of mobo's aimed at cards which draw more than the PCI-e spec, thus creating their own spec and label it an overclocker's standard..

So yeah I rushed out the picture a bit, thanks for clearing it up a bit Penn.

Yeah MB manufactors has this law making motherboards. Each PCI-Express lane on ur mothboard no matter if you have a mini ITX motherboard or an E-ATX with like 8 PCI-E connectors
its should only draw a maximum of 75watts on each PCI connector. Reason for that is that above that as penn said can fry your motherboard and if you have like a cheaper one that cant handle it aswell maybe.
Can actually brick the motherboard, either frying the lanes on the MB pcb or the card itself, it puts strain on everything on ur motherboard and can basicly kill any random part in it.

So 75watt is a max, and Polaris was taking an average at around 88watts through the PCI-E and even spiking way above as you can see in the diagram.

So if you have something that draws more than 75watts the dev of the product add like 6pin/8pin connectors on for example add wattage you part can take or need.
AMD have taken a 6pin connector instead of 8pin and took the rest of the needed power from the MB and kinda go around to hide that it actually draws more power than the 150watt TDP.
TDP = Max wattage draw no matter what OC or what you do to it.

In short the card can damage ur system and they lied that it only draws a maximum of 150watts and tried to hide it by taking more power from the motherboard to compensate the powerdraw for the card.

Dont get me wrong the card is impressive and fast for the cost, but they should have given it higher wattage draw and put a 8pin on instead.

Problem aswell that I've read/heard you cant solve this by changing the V-Bios "software on the card" to fix it,
its hardware manufactured this way, that means AMD needs to recall all cards to add more power to an external connector.
Atleast what the rumor say. So if all this is true they basicly killed their own launch right away. Cause personally I wouldnt wanna buy something that might fry my MB or other components on it.

Edit:
This test shows 126watts and it should be a max of 75watt.

Oh it already happened to some R9 480 buyers. PCI lanes that have fried.
