Next gen consoles.

by GoDM1N » Fri Apr 12, 2013 7:09 pm

So I know this is mainly a PC community, but some of us have consoles as well. Lets hear some opinions on them.

Known facts.

PS4
Touch pad on controller, also has a headphone jack (like the 360s do.)
No known legacy support (sony says maybe down the road)
Unknown price, but is rumoured to be under $500
X86 8 cored CPU, made by AMD. GPU also AMD based
Able to broad cast game, friends can remote in if you allow it, taking over your game.
PS4 can be updated while offline
Doesn't require internet connection to play.
Release date, holidays 2013

New Xbox
None that I know of. Lots of rumors though.

For the most part it seems same old same old to me, updated hardware that is around what you expect from a PC of the time. What I really find "juicy" is how more DRM is being pushed on console players. I don't really see why, its a console. Though it is more of a rumor than a fact, they also seem to be making it harder to buy/sell used games. This has been a very big plus side to owning a console for years, and something PC has lacked. Also EA is rumored to start selling their games for $70. Big surprise right? This all could work out very well for Valve and their "steam box"

I don't see any point in getting the next gen consoles when I have a more capable PC.

...well, except for the Wii U. Bought one in anticipation for the promising first party exclusives (and now I just have to wait for them to be released).

I only care about the games, and so far no new consoles have enough quality games to warrant a new console purchase.

The new Xbox requiring Internet in order to just play games is crap, I hope the rumor is false, but if true I hope they fail hard.

I've owned every Playstation released so far, including the old gray PS1, as well as the smaller light-gray one. And both sizes of PS2s. For their time, not much to complain about.
I've owned a Wii. Honestly, I wish people wouldn't complain so much about it. The control scheme for most games that required aiming was fantastic. I'd rather play a shooting game with a Wiimote than with 2 sticks, and possibly more than with a mouse. While it's true the graphics weren't with the times, I believe its other aspects made it competitive.
I would love to own a Wii U, except my internet sucks, probably halving its total use. Plus, no money.
As for the PS4, I won't argue. I would love one, but again, no money and barely any internet.
And as for the Playstation v Xbox feud, I won't get into that. If I could use a Wiimote with my computer, it would be my only system. (There's software avaliable for that, I'm sure, but I'm so damn lazy...)

I've said this in another forum before, but feel it's relevant to the Wii

Another thing is I think PC's superiority in graphic's is irrelevant. I say this because graphic's are extreamly relative to when you're talking about them, and they are very subjective as to whats better. What I mean by this is they're not something that is timeless as a good game is, they're fleeting and in a few months there will be something better out and it won't matter. Half-Life is still a great series as is many other titles, and because something else out looks better doesn't detract from this at all.

I would say the Wii's controls being different are better in some cases as well. I myself find Xbox controller is better for racing games than a keyboard, but I cant stand the Wii's (or tablet/phone) controls for racing games. The steering is all wrong. They also open up gaming to more people. I bought my grandparents a Wii a few years ago, and they still play it quite often actually. It's become somewhat of a family get together event playing Wii sports that has replaced things like card playing etc. The other consoles haven't had the same effect on them however.

Software for it's been around for years now. I remember seeing my old Computer Engineering teacher from high school do it, back in the 10th grade. You need a Bluetooth dongle for the computer to pick up the Wiimote, but you can Google for how to use the Wiimote on your computer.

Off topic but, if you have a good controller you can play all old 8 & 16 bit games at www.virtualnes.com w/o having to download roms and such.

You know what? I wrote that last post completely without steering in my mind somehow.
You're right, though. I've never liked playing a racing game with a Wiimote or a keyboard. I own an old USB Logitech steering wheel and pedals, but I don't know if they work with Windows 7 or 8.

And on the topic of controller simulation, when I play Sonic Adventure 2, I use a generic PS3 controller (that wasn't made by Sixaxis or Sony) with a wireless USB adapter and a software called Joy to Key.
...hell, I don't have a Wiimote anymore. They're all up north where my brothers live with the Wii.
