Most permanent magnets are ferromagnetic materials that have been heated until their structure becomes fluid, then exposed to a polarizing magnetic field. As the material cools, it forms a new structure with separated positive and negative charges that lose their ability to move freely, effectively fixing them as charges. As for how electromagnetic forces themselves work at the basic level, that would be Quantum Electrodynamics, and I think I can safely say that nobody understands Quantum Mechanics.

Lol Feynmann quote. I majored in Physics and Maths at uni, so I know how they work. I was just getting the ball rolling :P

Also: Word to the wise, if you ever consider studying Nuclear/Particle physics... Do yourself a favor and don't.

I think I'm a little past that point at the moment Fence. Good to see another physicist on the forums though!

Can you make something from nothing? If you can does it make that thing nothing?
What do you mean syringes don't go there? I am the doctor here... they go where I say they go.

According to the law of conservation of mass and energy, no, you cannot make something from nothing. Matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed; they can merely be transferred from one object to another.

With that in mind, what we often consider to be "nothing" is in fact something; a seething and infinitely disordered field of forces and particles, on the level that the two act as though one. Thermodynamics gives us an entropic view of the universe, and says that "something" can be created from "nothing", but to do so, it must consume order elsewhere for power.

You can take a bland field of pebbles devoid of order and turn them into a castle, but to do so you must destroy many chemical bonds to power the machines (or humans, the biological machines), creating disorder in turn.
