TF2 Crashes when rendering

by Vivi Hill » Wed Oct 12, 2011 1:54 pm

It is sad day: TF2 keeps crashing whenever I try to render a replay. Tried lots of things. Multicore rendering disabled, changed codecs all around, it crashes no matter what. I can play the replays back, but can't render them.

Verified integrity as well. Still no dice. Not really anything else I can think of to help. This doesn't seem to be a common problem. It worked with my old setup.

Yeah, I was having some issues with that last week too. I couldn't even retrieve the replays, TF2 just closed itself. It was missing some codec shader I think...or something like that. Could it be something in the way the server is saving the file?

I don't think that's the problem I'm having through. I can play back the videos. Just can't render them.

You might have checked this already, but I would suggest checking the printer cable.

I went to my dorm lounge and unplugged the printer cable but it didn't work! And now I can't print things! But if I want to print at the library it works! PLS HELP

PS: Its a wireless printer so the cables don't matter right?

Mine crashes all the time when it finishes. Most of my replays don't save right either, they either just say they're not there or crash when I try to open them.

Can you post your console output at time of crash so that we can see what's going on? There should also be a crash log autogenerated somewhere.

I'm not sure how I can post my console output. The game crashes completely. Also I don't think it has time to post a dump or crash log, since TF2 itself doesn't acknowledge the error. Windows just shows a pop up saying "hl2.exe has stopped working".

I should add that nearly every time I quit TF2 the game doesn't exit properly, and has a similar crash. But it hasn't affected the game in any way.

So I renamed the TF2 folder so i had a clean install. Then I joined some arbitrary server (first time in like 2 years!) and, once I found one that wasn't a reserved slot and had working replays (that was difficult...) I tried rendering one and it worked.

I then rejoined CSn and made a replay, and now I can render. So I guess the replay I was interested in recording was corrupted. Oh well, it wasn't an incredible replay :P

Thanks for trying to help, but now it seems to work. Ah well.

It usually is some element of the replay, but I've hacked around replay errors before. If you can isolate what item (usually a texture or model) was written incorrectly and caused the crash, you can sometimes work out a solution.

Glad to hear it wasn't an epic replay you lost.

O rly?

See, I've run into this problem a lot, and if there's a workaround I'd *love* to hear it, I've got a couple nice replays I'd like to render if they can be salvaged.
