In the past, every 2-3 months people would ask for a nocrits server. We tried this in the past and due to Valve shenanigans the server would sit idle. Essentially those random people that join, don't. Why? Because nocrits exempt the server from quick join. Ergo, when the few people that want it see it empty they go back to said slaybox then complain there are no servers with nocrits.

So essentially the server would fail since we couldn't get enough people to keep it populated.

But we haven't gone down this road in awhile. So vote your heart out, and we may listen... Maybe.

Why the discussion of custom maps vs. no-crit? Why can't we run both?

Random crits make the server fun. Yes, people (including myself) may get a little angry a few times or rage due to unlucky crit stickies under your nose, or a random crocket coming at your face like a facial in a bad porno, but it still keeps the servers alive. I'm not saying ONLY the crits do that, but I do feel that a no crit server would be a little boring, a little too plain, if you know what I mean. So i say no, to a no crit server.

Regularly, usually after about the 9th crit rocket hits me in the toenail exploding my entire body, I think to myself, "Hey, I wish this server ran no-crits." To me, no-crits means the game becomes a bit more skill based, and competitive and less luck based. Overall though, I'm on the fence about the issue since mostly it doesn't bother me too much since I'm just playing for funsies. However, I have some thoughts.

Does running the server no-crits require a server restart or can it be set ad-hoc by an admin? I would love it if there was a server that on Monday and Wednesday Nights, for example, from 6-12est the server turns into no-crits. At these times the servers are usually popped with regulars so I wonder how much if at all the average pop would be affected. Not sure how much of a pain this would be to setup, but if the no-crits was a special event I can see more people logging in for it just for the novelty, or just because it's something different, especially if it was advertised in some way on the HTML MOTD.

People seem to have a bizarre notion that to run a no-crits server we would have to cut something else. Redmins correct me if I'm wrong, but the understanding I have is that we can run both slayboxes, and the westbox, and the love nest, and fun-box 2 (whatever it becomes after monkeynauts are done), and the trade server, and tack on a no-crit server without much issue (as long as it's in Chicago).

If ya take away the crits then it would just be an "andvich" server, and that doesn't sound fun to play on.

I'm just gauging want. Nothing would/is getting taken away. Just some market research. Planning on doing the same thing with custom maps when this is done. (tomorrow.)

I abstain. I don't think it would stay pop'd, unless you really market to those comp players. But then it'd have to be like a super-deluxe propub server with no crits/no spread/push and koth maps only.

You should make a new poll: "How much would you play on a CSn no-crit server?" "Never" "Sometimes" "Often" "Exclusively" to gauge want. A lot of people are voting no because they think you're asking about turning crits off on a box as opposed to making a new non-crit server.

the issue is, in my opinion, not a matter of whether or not the majority of the regulars would play on a nocrit server, but rather whether or not we could keep it popped. thats the problem we have had in the past with nocrit servers. i for one, would like to give it another chance. Also, if we are able to keep a nocrit server popped, we will probably get new traffic to the community and new regulars.

This is true, however that's why no-crit pubs don't work imo. If a player is looking for something competitive, they join a lobby generally. They are hard to keep popped because of this, and you have to "force" a no-crit server pub to stay popped.

Actually, I want to be hardcore but I don't have the balls to join a lobby. Now that I think about it, I'd be pretty down with a nocrits server, and do some Harbleu medic plays.
