So I've had an idea for a few months now, and since it doesn't seem to be going away, I figured I'd post it here. I've been thinking of picking up a bunch of volunteers, getting together to practice timing a few times, and creating a TF2 orchestra that could operate when everyone was free.

It'd mostly be for making videos and stuff, though I guess impromptu performances would be pretty cool if a bunch of us happened to be on. A lot of it would be visual (medics taunting for violin pieces and whatnot) with the music laid over it in editing, but we'd also have scouts for percussion, pyros for brass..etc for an auditory element. I've been testing out instruments in my spare time and have found that this sort of thing is basically impossible to script; while it's not too hard to hit the keys at the right time, it can only really be performed by players (though players could always bot_mimic something to accompany them).

Does anyone here have any interest in this? I'd be playing the songs over HLDJ so we'd all be in sync. All the jobs are pretty easy to do if you can get the piece's basic structure down, and it's not like we can't retry any mistakes or smooth things in post. We'd probably set up times far in advance to be sure everyone was free as well.

For reference, the first song I'd like to do, and the one I've been fixated on for a while, would be the appropriately named Phantom Ensemble by Zun's Prismriver Sisters:



tl;dr: TF2 band might be getting together. Shouldn't be hard to play. You in, or at least think it's interesting?


Edit: I'm open to new ideas for instruments or visuals; if you think something would look or sound better, let me know during rehearsal, or any time at all really.

Here's the .fpl file for those of you with FLStudio or something similar. It has all the parts labeled and you can toggle the tracks, but as with all the .midi files, it's just an approximation.

Like how your loadout for him looks? We could use a pyro on brass.

If you go with this part, you'll basically be playing our trumpets, flutes, what have you; for each note, instead of blowing air, you'll be blowing propane.

Airblasts may also have a place as accents; I'll have to look into it.

Well I'm already manning the main strings, but I suppose we could always have another group. This way we'd be able to do RED and BLU strings.

Alternatively, if Crossbows can work as strings for audio, you could lead that section.

We'll i'm currently wearing the Dead Cone, but i've also got a lime painted fosters facade, modest pile of hat, gibuses, ellis caps, alien swarms, and a mann co hat :P, i've got every weapon for her.

I've been playing around with the idea of a Huntsman section for a while, but if that doesn't pan out, I'm sure we can find a place for Soldiers.

You'd probably be puppeting a sizable group due to the slow reload speeds of those class' weapons

Strike the Crossbow and Huntsman sections; we can't puppet enough musicians to make them work because bots can't equip non-default weapons.

This also does not bode well for our brass section, as the Backburner and Degreaser are the two instruments for the Pyro in the Phantom Ensemble. I was originally hoping we might be able to do this with 3-4 members and lots of puppets, but it's starting to look like we'll need a lot more people if we want this done right. 6-8 maybe.

One Pyro might still be able to handle all of the brass if I do some client-side file editing in post, but it might come out a bit off...

- A server where we can enable sv_cheats and spawn some puppet bots
