A Personal Trainer, please?

by Yuu » Wed Apr 20, 2011 4:53 pm

I used to be just a casual player in TF2 but I started getting more and more active, so naturally I get a little better. People say you get better by playing better players but it's just not working for me. On Lotus and iO servers, I'm easily a big fish in a small pond but on CSn, I'm getting facerolled left and right and I can't quite keep up with everyone else. I'd like to request someone to help me master these classes. I'll pay the trainer in weapons/scrap if they're really worth their salt.

You're probably getting rolled here because you're being to aggressive. The others server you play on are faster respawn. Here it's stock.

I'd suggest playing in the mid of your teammates. And play medic, find a good buddy, and watch what they do.

These videos helped me with soldier a lot

Pandapoopz 1

Pandapoopz 2

(equalizer info in this one is outdated)

There's a 3rd one now, too

For demo, all that I'd recommend is that you learn how to use the pipes and don't be afraid to mash m2 shamelessly with stickies

He means that people play like pussies here... jk. But it isn't uncommon for the "top players" to be at the back of a push. Having pocket medics helps a lot too, or if you're z, seven of them. I think I am far from one of the top players here, but if I can assist you in anyway I am more than willing to help, without being bribed ;).

If you go to my youtube page (sorry I don't know a better way to link this) I have a playlist if you scroll down on the right column called TF2 Espionage and it's a series of Spy Training videos by Wutsyurdeal aka TheSentryIsASpy that have been sponsored by Valve (it's the only sticky post on the spy forum by a community member). Here is the first vid:

"The spy is considered to be the most difficult class to play in TF2"

Class that requires no aim (in an fps game) is really hard, having to dm people that aren't shooting/dodging is terribly difficult, getting 1-shot-kills and double points must be excruciating.

A lot harder than getting air/meat/head shots, thats for sure.

I really wonder where this guy got his statistics from, probably the Spy forums

Depends how you interprete the "most difficult class to play in TF2". Sure it doesn't require good aiming much, but it requires something that not everybody has in fps shooters... Intelligence. lol

Other classes ('xcept maybe Medic and Engie) require more instinct and talent than strategy. But I gotta agree that mastering a good Spy is nothing like mastering a good Soldier. o.o

Play medic.

While being useful/healing your team, pick out the better players and then latch on to them for some extended runs. You'll learn a lot about their strategy as well as proper Medic/pair strategy's.

Like Sirnak said, it's difficult in different ways, debatably more difficult in those ways than other classes in theirs? Lets start with, hrm... I don't know, scout? Scout is fastest class in the game, he can double jump, he counts as 2 people on points and carts, and he can one shot most classes and I've seen him 2 shot every class at a medium to short range... VS... The Spy, which does crap damage all the time unless he gets a crit headshot with the ambassador (oh but we don't have to aim, I forgot) or get close enough to grab Toaster's ass from behind to kill him. Spy is the only class that is required to go past the front line and into enemy territory to be effective, runs at the base run speed, which is slower than everyone but sniper and engi, whom both don't rely on movement. This means you have to very slowly get behind an enemy, without other nearby enemies going, hey why is that medic not healing and running straight at that scout's ass? and still get a kill. Spy has classes and weapons purposely designed to counter him, such as the pyro, jarate, milk, etc and Spy is tied for the least amount of hitpoints with Scout, Engi, and Sniper before weapon effects... which 60hps I think tops the cake. Spy is also one of the few classes in most competitive play that is not considered a viable main due to the amount it brings to a team verse it's difficulty.

No explosives that can kill numerous people or objects at once. Throw in the amount of failstabs which outweighs the amount of facestabs and the revolver's habit of misfiring...

Anyway, enough mememememe, this wasn't supposed to be about which class is the most difficult to play, this was supposed to be about giving advice. I never said that I agreed with Wutsyurdeal's personal opinions (him and I have actually bumped heads more than once on the forums) but he does have the number one rated spy training series that covers a little bit of everything. Yuu asked for help with specific classes, the one of which I can be the most assistance with is spy, unlike you, I am not a high-end player with every class.

Toaster, my dear nemesis, I look forward to serving you a stabbymcstabstab the next time we play together... assuming I can stop vomiting long enough =S

P.S. I think airshots are hard as shit... I've yet to land one if you're referring to launching someone into the air with a rocket and then rocketing them whilst they're in the air. Hardest thing to do in the game? Probably Pyro compression blast-rocket jump. AND, before all of the hate mail, I think Demo and Scout are the strongest classes in the game.

I only quoted you because you posted the link, was not meant to be rude. Or maybe I didn't offend you and you just love writing me 500+ character love stories. <3<3

I would have to Agree scout is one of the most powerful classes in a 6v6 setting, not in pubs though. Spy isn't popular in 6v6 because the class takes advantage of poor play; no communication and lack of organization.

Scouts necessity to give up distance for more damage, which counteracts his low health is only made possible by it's mobility. Spy has cloak instead of mobility.

At a mid range a scattergun will do 60 damage if centered perfectly, thats not 2 shotting anything fast. =p Even at point blank, meat shots only do 105 max damage. I don't think I need to fill in this blank

All this is comparing apples and oranges though, even if the classes are some what similar in their rolls.

I just thought him saying the class he likes to play is the hardest class in the game to be rather laughable. I main scout and sniper, I suck at demo/soldier but I can still admit that they're far harder and have a much higher skill sealing than scout/sniper. Of course for the most part demo is "left click right click" and soldier is "shoot ground get kill" :D

Another thing you might want to consider is just playing the class that you have the most fun with and getting better through just playing it a lot. I know you said that you already know that playing with good people will get you better, but really it is the truth. You can watch videos and get the general idea of what good players do, but its up to you to create your own style of play you enjoy playing and getting good at it. Find what role you enjoy playing as (aggressive, defensive, support, etc) and just run with it. The more time you put into your class the better you will get.

I kind of like that you would post something like that :P

With IQ being the measurement of intelligence, I would have to say Spy takes a lower IQ to play than most other classes yet.

*Just for the sake of argument here, I personally don't think IQ has that much to do with your performance in an fps.*

Someone with a higher IQ can process information faster than someone with an average IQ, right? Wouldn't an above average soldier be able to calculate distance/speed faster than someone els and land more direct? Same would go for scouts/snipers aiming and landing shots faster.

I think you meant to say Spy requires better decision making than most classes, which I would agree with. Some classes really don't need any plan at all, just W+m1. (yeah you guys know who I'm talking about...) :)

That would be the right choice. And I think sniper could require the most talent... a good huntsman that landed every headshot or rifle that landed every snapshot could be invaluable... I however, am not that good.

Yeah, all the classes require different strengths, but I don't see Spy requiring more intelligence per se. Here's at least my interpretation of it:

  • Scout: Good aim, quick decision making, deciding when to escape/when to push
  • Soldier: Good projectile predicting, predicting when a player is low on health, ammo is important, keeping enough rockets loaded, rocket jumping
  • Pyro: Side routes, sneaking from behind, avoiding direct engagement until close enough to target
  • Demoman: Similar projectile predicting as soldier (variation: curves), trapping choke points, destroying buildings, sticky jumping
  • Heavy: Conserving ammo, careful spin up positioning to avoid spies/snipers, teamwork with medic
  • Engineer: Sentry placement, resource management, deciding when to upgrade, avoiding spy/demo attacks, knowing when to move forward or retreat
  • Medic: Choosing targets to heal, avoiding self-death at all costs, deciding when to push with an uber, and with whom.
  • Sniper: Superb aim, changing locations to keep other snipers at bay, listening for enemies/spies nearby, ammo conservation
  • Spy: Hiding, survival, retreat, staying out of enemy's view, choosing right time to strike (generally when enemy is indisposed elsewhere), resource management (watch), tricking enemy with disguises/dead ringer

Anyway this is just a general gist of it. Certainly doesn't cover anything, and I don't mean to trivialize any of the classes (I personally think that every class is equally powerful given different situations).
