So what community borked the attachables mods

by Failhorse » Sat Apr 16, 2011 1:58 am

I won't mention names on anything here. But you can.

OK so this dude made a legal work around back when valve first banned attachables (in mods.) IE no more valve hats in mods, but ZF, and Saxton mods were possible. Then some other dude figured out a work around that allowed what Valve had not intended. Decided to go around and sell it. The first guy warned if this happened he'd alert Valve. And they would end it all. So the first guy went back and changed his mod to allow what the guy was charging for because he didn't want the second guy to make money off a mod. Alerted Valve of what was going on, and what he was doing. In response Valve locked out attachables entirely.

So who knows who did it? What communities actually bought it, and what asshats had to make it hard on everyone else?

I bet the valve staff wants to pull their hair out, and smoke lots of weed right now. The steam forums exploded with bitching yesterday, and rightly so, this update sucks.

Robin and Gabe owe me (don't ask why). :| SO KARMA WILL COME MY(our) WAY! Hopefully when Benny gets out of potato and ARG lands he'll fix the server up.

Currently SLAG is running Saxton Hale, TF2 Ware, and so on. So they're whitelisted as well.

Slag uses the same attachment process that prop hunt uses. That's why it works. The other dude used the attachables mod to skin peeps. and is broken.

Then we should probably work too, right? I dunno what Benny did... But I'm sure you can tell Benny how to fix it if he's not doing it right.

We use slag mods. The issue is the server is out of date. I blame potatoEs.

Randomizer is our only dead issue.

We can change randomizer into our custom map slaybox server.

Just spoke to fingerman, it's a no go. Said that custom maps would eat his bandwidth up real quick.

Custom maps wouldn't eat his bandwidth up because we'd use the main CSN website for fastdl. We have plenty of bandwidth to spare (437.31 GB last month out of 2000). This includes fun, trade (which both use fastdl), and the main website.

If so, then why don't we have custom map server? So far I haven't actually heard any legitiment points against it other than "random people might be turned off by it and leave."

We've tried one before. It didn't do too well, and we assumed this was because a) lack of interest and b) people didn't like waiting for the downloads.

I guess we do have a larger audience now. If we have an audience for it it might work out better than it did before.

A quick fix tor the regular players or at least people who visit the site would be to keep an up to date .zip folder with all the maps in there, so you wouldn't have to DL at each map change. If we were to ever do that, I could manage that. I feel like contributing to the community more.
