If you watch closely his ammo hits 0 and the game automatically equips his shotgun since it has ammo, he's still holding M1 though so he just starts clipping away into the ground with the shotgun until he picks up flamethrower ammo and has to switch back with mouse wheel. He does however let go of M1 a couple times around 3:30.
