Curious if anyone knows what is going on.

Hi guys. I'm having a problem and wondering if any of you guys have had a similar issue.

I played around on TF2 last night, max settings, great FPS, everything is hunky dory. I just tried to play TF2 and my frame rate has dropped exponentially. It's like I'm swimming through pea soup. It's literally unplayeable. And it's like this for all my other source games as well. But all my other games are still running perfectly fine at max settings. Is there any way I can uninstall source and try rebooting it? I don't know what the hell is going on, but it's really a game-breaking problem for me.

1) It didn't drop exponentially, it dropped significantly.

2) Batch defrag your GCFs, check your console for errors in-game, and look at your system resource usage and temperatures as you run with low FPS.

1) I used the term exponentially to emphasize my shock.

2)I Game cache all checks out. Will look at console in game. Will look at resource usage.

I didn't say to verify the integrity of your game cache. I said to batch defrag your GCFs.

Yeah, sorry. Yeah, I'm defraging now. I just misread your post before; I was already planning to defrag anyway.

No, I haven't updated any graphics drivers for like a month now. I've checked and my drivers are all up to date. It's just changed overnight. And I think it's a source problem because my non-source games are still exactly the same. I'm only having problems with TF2, L4D2, Portal. And I've noticed that when I boot the game up, the source logo (the head) stutters and the source theme stutters as well.

Defragged all source games. Problem still occurring. CPU usage is about 75% during game. Temps. about 47 degrees. I don't know. I might just have to reinstall steam. Fuck, that'll take forever.

What's your RAM usage? GRAM? GPU? GPUtemp? Southbridge Temp?

Why has no one offered the obvious solution involving the printer cable? Check it immediately!

Update guys.

I've gotten TF2 to start up now. I'm currently using 28% of my CPU and about 3 gb RAM usage. But, while I'm running 27 FPS again, I can barely move at all. I'm plodding along like a brass beast heavy even as a scout. And although I can swing the camera around wildly in all directions without any lag at all, I'm jumping and moving extremely, extremely slowly. So still unplayable. I guess, if I can't find any solution first, I'll try to completely uninstall everything then reinstall steam and see if that fixes anything. Still fine in non-source games though.
P.S. Fingerman, I have a wireless printer, no cable required. :)

So others see you moving this slowly too? Your in-game movement is physically affected?

You still haven't given me any data for your GPU or motherboard.

Sorry Techerizer, I forgot to add my other temps. GPU temp is about 60 degrees. Motherboard temp...I can't seem to find. And I'll have to ask people about the in game stuff. I don't know if they see me as slower, but it's possible. All I know is that the problem persists even in offline mode.

Nope, reinstalled and the fucking problem's still there. Good FPS, no lag at all, move like I'm on the fucking moon.

Seriously, it's even like this in Portal.

Did you delete your Steam folder when you uninstalled? Or at least move/rename it?

Well, I'm just gonna try restoring from backups see if that fixes anything. And yes, I deleted the steam folder and altered the registry.

Good News Everyone!

I appear to have fixed my problem. I restored from backups and it appears that an update to my Dell Offline Backup software was causing the slowdown, both in game and on my computer. I have no idea why the hell it was doing it, but for now, the problem appears to be gone.

What kind of computer are you using?

Like I said above, so far, it appears the problem was centered in my offline backup program. I'm gonna wait to see if it comes back, but it's stable again now.

HP Compaq

It's a real bad computer, but it worked fine before. Recently it's been dragging and my scout goes the speed of a soldier, and I can't play like I used to. What'd you do to fix it?

I backed up my computer to about a week ago and the problem disappeared. I only found out it was the backup software when I re-updated said software and the problem came back. Maybe you should look closely at your computer updates recently. Or check the C++ net framework for your computer.

It's probably listening to file changes and noticing when TF2 changes its cache files. This was a problem for some antivirus software too. If there's a way to blacklist your steam folder from being backed up in realtime it might stop doing that.

I thought the same. I had a small issue with my antivirus software before I cleared Steam in it. But I think I've solved the problem, and I know what to try first next time if it happens again. :ugeek:
