ESEA team go!

by The 12th Doctor » Sun May 29, 2011 11:17 pm

Also known as, the Doctor's descent into madness.

Following Harri's idea, I wondered how I would be able to do in a competitive scene. So, looking through possible leagues and the like, I thought I'd try my hand at ESEA. And where better to find fellow TF2 enthusiasts than Critsandvich! So, in my sleep-deprived madness, I've started taking care of the logistics of making an ESEA team. Since we're probably going for 6v6, keep that in mind when picking a class. I'm going to edit this post to reflect the current state of the team.

Also, there's only 9 days left to form the team. So, if you can spare the time (probably practice once a week, two comp games a week during the season) and want to get in on competitive scene, go ahead and post!

EDIT: I forgot to mention something rather important. There's a few fees to enter. I can probably pay for one or two of you guys, but I don't have the money to pay for all of you. You've got to join the ESEA premium, which is ~$7 a month, and then pay for league entry. I'll be honest, I don't know how much the league entry fee is, simply because I can't pay it until I have a team name.

Also, any ideas for team names? I'll list those ideas as well!

Players (roles) :

The 12th Doctor (scout/soldier)
Hotpocket mmmmm (scout/soldier/spy)
stanley the manley (soldier/demo)
Echoplex (soldier/demo)
Techercizer (medic)

Team names:
The Burning Rangers (suggested by the Doctor)
Critsandvich Pubbers (suggested by Techercizer)
My Little Pwny (suggested by Echoplex)
[#ur:] (suggested by Echoplex)
War Pigeons (suggested by Echoplex)
[STAR WOLF] (suggest by Echoplex)
Silver Medal (suggested by Hotpocket)
Accidentally Awesome (suggested by Hotpocket)
Sandvich Society (suggested by Hotpocket)
Critwich and Milk (suggested by Hotpocket)
CRIT-SLAM-VICH TEAM (suggested by xbawkzes, despite not volunteering for the team. :D)

I would heal the shit out of fuck.

Do they allow the Amputator in this league? It'd be sweet if they do, but if not, that just means I get to RAPE ENTIRE SERVERS with my syringe gun if all my patients die. Only as a last resort while running away, of course.

I've been wondering how well I could do in competitive TF2 for a while now; it'd be nice to finally see.

on CSn servers.
I don't expect you to, but I appreciate those of you that do.

Amputator is banned in league matches. I'm unsure about scrims and pugs, but I'll look it up for you.

I should be able to cover my fee just fine as long as there's a viable payment method for me. As for team names... shouldn't it be a gestalt of all our naming desires or something?

If not, we could always be the CritSandvich Pubbers or something self-explanatory like that.

I concur, but we need to get those names out there, just so we know what we're going with. In a day or two, we'll put it together and have our team name.

Also, payment is via PayPal, so rather quick and easy.

I guess I should set up a paypal then.

BTW, do we get loot if we somehow manage to dominate everyone we fight?

Yep. We'd be competing in the Open division, which has the following prizes:

Open Division, Prize Pot: $1,200
1st place: $600
2nd place: $270
3rd place: $210
4th place: $120

Copied straight from their site.

I've got it!

For our name, we should each pick a theme song we think our team should have. Then we'll mash the song names and themes together into something relatively short. Alternatively, we could use our names or something like that.

You should call yourselves the
CRIT-SLAM-VICH TEAM

Because you'll be slamming your opponents on their asses with your unlimited amounts of raw power and unmatched skill!

In all serious, I have no idea. I'm just boosting your confidence with a confidence-boosting name.

If I can't get UGC to respond to my team sign-up I'll see who is interested from Critsandvich Deli. UGC is pissing me off, they haven't even set up servers for practice or pre-season stuff. :( :( :(

Hey, the one I suggested was from the following video, which might be the best thing that Sega has ever produced. The song, not the game.

Burning Rangers!

I'm going to throw up a poll in a few minutes with the current names for the team in it. At the end of today (Wednesday, CDT), I will register our team. Kinda got a deadline to work with, after all.

Also, sorry xbawkzes, could only put 10 names up there. ^^;;

Like 20 bucks for 3 months, I think?

As for the time, it's probably only 3 matches over the course of an entire week as I understand it, and scheduling is usually quite flexible.

Alright then. With the current votes tallied, I'm going to go ahead and make the team. Our name is going to be "Sandvich Society", which means our tag will likely be [SS].

I'll post again when I get it all done.

Remember to put the Doc as your referrer when you pay your league fee so he can get some cool swag. It doesn't cost you anything, and if you don't do it, nobody gets anything for free at all. You can find his user info here: http://esea.net/users/458333

Why not work out a [NOM] tag somehow?

Edit: Out team could be called New! Original! Meat! or something in honour of the original Sandvich poster. Or something less nonsensical.

We could also probably swing [POOTIS] with something if we wanted to; how about Players Of Outstanding Taste In Sandviches?

Wait, so how expensive is this thing overall? Why are 6 people with no comp experience at all (even lobby, afaik) joining a pay league D: Anyone have ESEA experience that can comment? Can we start practicing? :P

We're joining because we want to have fun and test ourselves against competitive teams. We can start practicing in parts at any time, but we can't start practicing as a team until we get all our members.

I'd really like to join and get competitive, but I am one of those players that either has really good days or really bad days. Not going to chuck myself into a risk there.

Good luck to yas anyway, and maybe if I get better as a player, I'd play some competitive TF2 then.

Well, got good news and bad news.

First, the bad. I'm unable to get on steam at the moment, which is my preferred method of communication. Also, Hotpocket is unable to join the roster. Which means we're two people down.

Now, good news! We're still going forward. I'm talking with a few people, trying to get them to join. Also, I've decided that I'm going to pay the league fee for the entire team. So, you guys only have to pay the regular ESEA fee.

Alright guys, we need to get on the ball. So far, tech is the only one to have joined the team. I'm going to take care of the league fee and everything! But first, you guys need to join!

You might be able to get the new guy on the forum to join your team. He is apparently very good, and he posted about wanting to start a team. Plus, I heard he has money!!!

Okay I'll sign up today. What's your alias on the site so I can use you as a referral? I talked to Zclipse a little about comp leagues, and unless we pick up some serious pros, we're going to get roflstomped in ESEA as opposed to something like CEVO-A. I don't really care, I'm more looking forward to doing practice/lobby and getting our feet wet while we possibly win :P Yeah, there is a new guy who expressed some interest in doing comp stuff - he posted a thread in this forum

Comp stuff isn't so bad. It just takes practice and team compatibility. If you work together, give criticisms, and create strats for team-executed wins then you might succeed in some matches. I can always help if needed. I have comp experience.

Hey I'm new here but I play on your server a lot. I'm friends with Parsifals and he told me that you're looking for people to join your comp team. I'm not a great player but I think I'm pretty good and would like to join if you'd have me. I've put in 400 hours in 6 months, I have a very flexible schedule and the sign-up fee is no problem at all. My preferred classes are demo, medic and ragespy.

i suggested slinger should say hello bc he plays a decent variety of classes and does them well.

though frankly, despite having watched a lot of competitive vids, i'm still not 100% sure what's reasonable on various maps. for example i don't see a lot of engineers, which i'm guessing is because ubers/communication are so well coordinated that sentry guns don't work nearly so well as they do on pubs.

basically a lot of soldier/demo/scout/sniper/medic and that's it, which resembles qwtf in a lot of ways. spy was never a competitive class, since players know where each other are so well that it's virtually useless.

i'd love to sign on and i play more or less constantly, though my hours are fucked up, if matches are scheduled regularly i'll take a particular night off or whatever. essentially i'd rearrange my life around being able to play competitive tf and possibly lose 100% of the time. i've played more than 300 clan matches at a high level in my life... i'm used to it all.

what's the fee and all of that, or my share of it, if you want me?

i'd only be useful as a soldier.

Just a heads up to everyone. I had to rush home to my family to defuse a family crisis before it had time to explode. What this means is that I'm out of commission until Friday. I can do administrative things via my smartphone, as well as post in this forum. No steam, though, which means no TF2 from me. I was planning on setting up a practice in the next few days, so if one of you guys can set it up and play, go for it.

Bad news: Stanley has dropped due to scheduling issues. So, we're still a man down. Bring in anyone you can. If we don't have 6 paid and registered players in a little more than 24 hours, we don't play this season. Really not how I want to start our road to victory.

I'm keeping an eye on the ESEA site, so I can pay for you as soon as you join the team. If someone wants to join and I'm not on, give them the password so they can go ahead and join.

A bit of a rough start, I know. But we'll prevail!

i'll ask a buddy of mine and slinger's, he's an excellent player, though he is a westie and only gets a decent ping on the chicago server. he should be into it, i'll try to impress upon him some urgency. he's a good scout and soldier, and it looks like we could use some scouting, so it would be a good fit.

so he's going to sign up right now, his name is SilentRebel, and he can play scout/soldier. he'll downplay his soldier skills but he's around as good as i am, maybe i'm a notch or half a notch better at that class.

he's got maybe 500 hours of tf2 and is a grinder type--really superb poker player (like slinger); we know each other from our private poker forum.

i appreciate you guys letting us do this. i was going to start something with these guys, and it's awesome that we can do it this way instead. i'm confident they can hang with the CSn players on the team, and won't bring down the level in the least bit.

i'm going to practice the fuck out of my rollouts for this as soon as we get a map schedule. i'm excited.

we've got a NY server with a 4th member of the poker forum that's only a few days old and hence doesn't have much in the way of traffic, for anyone who'd like to practice teamwork/rollouts (and we could likely hold practices there if all of the csn servers are public and you'd prefer to keep them running that way). none of us are experienced admins or anything, but i'm sure we can manage. ip is:

so, i've gotten two people to sign up--lax3r, who is a donator, and a guy named wensleydale the gentlemanne, who is a guy i pub with sometimes who top 3s like a boss.

if you pay their entry fees, i will reimburse you for mine and theirs by the end of the week--i don't have any money in my account and barely any in my pocket, because my last couple of shifts were tremendously bad. but i have a lot of good parties this week and i'll be flush w cash and insist on repaying you. i suppose we can do that through tf2 if we have to, i'll buy you some hats, something, anything.

if i look at the site and they haven't been paid at like 11:15, i'll at least be able to pay for one of them, possibly both, so i'll keep my eye on the esea site. it's a small price to pay to get my feet wet.

Still, I'm quite excited. You guys have no idea.

And there's a load off of my shoulders. I'm still going to be offline until Friday, but I'm still going to monitor everything from this iPhone.

So, in regards to training, I recommend a MGE server. The only one I could find is out of Europe, but I didn't lookvery hard. It was difficult, but it was a blast and I found myself having to think more about 1v1 battles. I've also got a few ideas for working on our medic/demo protection.

The biggest thing we need to train for is our coordination as a team. Doc and I have been thinking of rocking the Crossbow loadout for med, and we're going to need some serious discipline if we want to make that work.

i'm not sure whether rancor would prefer to start off playing pocket or roaming soldier, and i think i fit in either role--but would perform better roaming because i'm more naturally aggro and not as keen on keeping myself from dying and therefore leaving the medic vulnerable. slinger the demo, reb and 12th the scouts i'm assuming, since i can't scout worth a damn. and lax3r can probably fill one of those positions as well.

and as long as you know how to use it tech, and i think you do, i think using the crossbow is a fine idea. does esea actually ban the amputator or is it just the combo of the two?

The amputator is banned. Almost all non-vanilla items are banned. If you guys think you're up for it, the soldiers can be both pocket and roaming. A bit more versatile, but hard as he'll to pull off.

And yeah, I'm one of the scouts.

i've just been apprising myself of some of the available materials on competitive play and thinking more seriously about it.

actually thinking about it, rancor seems to have some experience, and i think he probably has more mobility than i do roaming... that's likely the best position for him.

and as for having soldiers rotate back for heals and switch roles like that... takes too much coordination to think about before we know where we're at.

Ok, I'm in :D Looks like the CSN mumble server isn't around anymore...the old TFGN one still exists but I don't know who pays for it

Also, what are we doing about the tag? [SS] kinda seems nazi-ish plus #ss is already a famous clan...what about [NOM] or somethin like that?

Alright, got you paid for, Echo. And I was a fan of POOTIS, but that's too long to be a tag. I'm kinda iffy of SS to be honest, but that was what won my hastily set up poll. Still open to suggestions.

Hey, my vote was for "Burning Rangers", if just for the theme song. Still, as soon as we come to a decision, I'll change the team's name as soon as we come to a decision.

Well, damn. I'm temporarily banned from ESEA. It says that one of my transactions has been reversed, despite Paypal saying the opposite. I'll get it fixed on Friday, but I figured I should explain in case it has me flagged or something.

EDIT: it seems to have been fixed. My karma has been restored and everything. No harm done.

DOUBLE EDIT: I'm a bit hesitant for [STAR WOLF], mainly because I have a deep-seated grudge against Pigma. UvM sounds awesome. I throw my vote at that.

UvM seems a bit serious to me; I mean, our goal is to kick ass and take names, of course, but we're basically a bunch of sandvich-eating, forum-chatting, pubbers who're jumping into the pool to see how cold the water gets.

I guess I wouldn't object to UvM if we decided on it, but I've been hoping to find a name with some humor in it.

I have returned.

Internet is amazing and wonderful, full of wonder for my computer. No longer will I have to keep watch on this website via smartphone. Truly, this is a historic day.

So, back to business. Since we've got three votes for it, I'm going to temporarily change the name to UvM. We can continue to brainstorm until we find our final name or if UvM grows on us. Also, I say we have a practice this upcoming Monday at 7pm Central Daylight time. Any objections?

I still think Sandvich-society is the best on the list and so as not to have the tag be connected to the Nazi's you could have it as [Ss/S-S/SvS/svs/:[]/] or other variants.

Also it has nothing to do with the fact that i favor names of my own creation...

Oh shit. Didn't realize that league teams can only change their team name once every 30 days. So for now, we're UvM. Quick question: Is this a currently existing clan? Or is this just a name that you've had lying around from when you guys used to run together?

Also, let's just flag what times we can meet on the following event: http://www.needtomeet.com/meeting.aspx? ... 31c4attend

Alright, taking a look at the scheduling thingy, the best time that I can find is for Friday at 1PM. 3 out of 4 people who filled it out would be able to work that time. I think we could use the server that parsifals has to practice on, unless there are any objections.

Still waiting to hear from ESEA about the schedule. Apparently, it will be given and I'll be able to schedule it whenever the season begins.

So, we're up for practicing tomorrow from 1pm to whenever? I'll be on as long as someone else is, so we should get some stuff done. Looking forward to the season starting!

Just an update on that schedule. We've got our first 6 matches set up. I think you just got the placeholders.

Seems to be 9:30 pm every Tuesday and Thursday, starting week after next, for three weeks. How does that sound for everyone?

9:30 on Thursday is a stretch for me. I have class until 9 every Thursday and it takes me about an hour to get back home. It often finishes early so I get home roughly 9:30 but I certainly can't depend on it.

Well, that's why we have subs on our team. I'm not entirely sure how woke and boke and lax3r36 are as demo, but I'm sure we can think of something.

Also, I think we did well in practice today. Mostly just stanley, reb, and myself trying to pick the medic out from under pars's watchful eyes. Then some MGE, and that was about it. Next one should be in a few days. And I think I may try to arrange a scrim, just to see how we'll do, sometime in the next week.

If you're like me and you're a complete noob to this it's worth it to read the rules page, then you find out important stuff like you have to be a premium member and during play you have to be running the ESEA client (found here: http://esea.net/index.php?s=downloads&d=view&id=505 )

so i just talked w a couple of guys, mostly dragoneill, about setting up scrimmages and all of that... i'm going to coordinate with 12th but ultimately look to set up a scrim for monday. worse comes to worst we can get rancor's other team. but the way it generally works is teams get ready and go into the channel and look for a scrim right then. so if people can make it monday night (i know rancor is in) and 12th is good, let's try to start seeking a game monday night.

when are you guys available that day? i'll also be around sunday night at 10est or so, and we could try then.

so since tech's availability is limited monday, and it seems like people are around sunday nights, i'm going to try to get you guys together tonight around 10, 1030 est, depending on when i get out of work and who's around. we might not be able to field THE team but i think we can manage A team, even if we end up pulling someone like stanley to play for us just to get some experience under the belts of everyone else.

i know what channels people use and how to get a scrim at our level without looking stupid, but what irc network are the tf2 players on, even? it's not the same one as in days of yore.

k, i think we'll be able to get a game going tonight as long as reb and 12th or at least one of them is around.

just a brief speech guys...

i'm new to tf2, but i have a lot of experience clanning, leading, and evaluating talent. and i can tell you straight up that there is a lot of talent on this team. individually, we are pub stars. each one of you is an excellent player in his own right. compared with the skill level of other clans in our division, we are far closer to the top than we will realize for a long time (provided we get this going and stay with it, which i hope we will). i've been looking at some other clans, seeking out their servers and players... and with the guys we have right now, we could top 16 our division, if we had top notch teamwork to go with it.

but teamwork is the key, and we will experience many rolls setting out. the only way to mitigate those losses, which will feel pretty devastating because we perceive on an individual level that we could have won, is to get together and practice, scrimmage, and evolve. you could be elite open divisioners, if not in the ESEA, then in other leagues for sure. it will take some work and dedication of a few nights a week to scrimmage, if we want to win our matches. but it can definitely happen.

so the more you give to this, the more you stand to get, in recognition and satisfaction. we haven't really gotten started yet, but i hope that we will hit the ground running, get at least a couple, hopefully a few scrimmages under our belt before the season starts, and steal a few games. i know everyone has responsibilities--we're not a bunch of kids--but i will be immensely grateful for all the time you put in, so please don't feel taken for granted if you merely show up. i know that 12th, too, appreciates it a good bit, and reb is also very dedicated to the idea of making this work.

lastly, our first match will be on snakewater. pretty much no servers run it. however, if you contact me any time i'm on, i will set up the 67s (that's the poker group to which slinger, reb, and i belong) server to run it, if you want to try to get a game going. 66.55.146.195:27015. if you want to play on it, i might be able to bring a few people, and if you can bring a few, we've got a game.

one more thing... 67s has an associated ventrilo server, but that costs money (our admin says), and mumble is free. can anyone provide a mumble server as soon as tonight?

Quick note: Big reason that I haven't been on in the past few days is that I am incredibly ill at the moment. I'm getting over whatever it is that I currently have, slowly but surely. So, I apologize for not being on very much for the past few days.

I'm in one of the better periods, but it seems to come and go, so I'll try to be there tonight. I wish all of us luck.

The good news is that in the second lobby we played we actually won a round and put up some sort of fight the rest of the way despite the fact that one of our soldiers randomly switched to sniper and all our 2nd scout did was try to get behind them and backcap.

i've been playing a bunch of lobbies since last night and it's made me much better. rancor also gave us some excessively valuable coaching after the first one we played as a group (where it was as slinger says a miracle that we won a round).

so please anyone who's interested in playing a lobby message me and i'll start a game. i don't think we can get snakewater going, but since it's the first esea map, maybe we can. otherwise i'd like to play some granary bc that's my best map so far, and maybe we can get people onto a viaduct game.

Well I have to say playing a Lobby was certainly an interesting experience. Before the match I'd always entered practice asking myself "How can I best heal and support my teammates this match?". Now when I join a comp practice session, I instead wonder "What new and interesting way am I going to find to completely fuck everything up today?".

Should we practice first? Or at least meet?

Okay, I sent invites to as many of you as I could find on my Steam friend list for a UvM group that I created. I'll be posting practice times and things on there.

Also, we have an offer for Wednesday at 9:30 CDT for our second match. If I hear no objections in the next 10 hours, I'm going to go ahead and accept.

Wednesday is difficult for me (Tu or Th would be better), but I can make it if I have to.

If you guys need an extra or a ringer I'm always around to help. Even if I am not currently playing team fortress I am most likely on the computer doing some type of work and finding information on certain topics. Just send me a message and I'll be there. Wish ya luck and have fun m8's.

Won't be able to make the Tuesday game because of a friend's birthday. When has the Fruit game been re-scheduled? It still says June 29th.
