You have no idea with the smell. You should never, never ever open that shit up inside, the smell will get long time to dissapear so best is eating it outside yes so the wind can take it away.

They don't even sell the fermented fish in Stockholm anywhere. I went to about five grocery stores I saw randomly and nobody had it.

Surstrommen is now a part of history. They don't sell it in stores anymore, you have to special order it. In Iceland they at least had fermented shark or "greenland shark". I ordered a meal called the braveheart where they give you dried fish jerky, fermented shark, bread and a shot of iceland schnapps. Here is a pic after I had eaten some:
