Getting a new computer...need some help

by Fencerboy » Mon Oct 08, 2012 10:48 am

EDIT: NEW THREAD W/ PARTS viewtopic.php?f=21&t=5589

Hi guys,

So I'm looking to get a new computer.

Right now I'm thinking of getting a Dell XPS 8500 and adding the parts I need to improve my gaming experience.
The Dell Alienware X51 Desktop is also a possibility.

Basically I have no idea what I'm doing...
Did I make good choices?
Recommend any parts? (graphics cards, etc.)
Should I just build my own PC?
Is Alienware shit?

Thanks for your help!

Don't do it. Just build your own desktop it will be much cheaper and perform better to your specfications

Alienware computers are horrendously overpriced, do not buy them.

If you are going to buy a new desktop I would highly recommend building it yourself, plenty of people here on CSn to help you out with it. It's also rewarding to build your own PC, and you tend to learn a lot more about computer systems themselves by doing so. Plus it's generally cheaper to build your own PC

For the record, laptops are miracle investments for college.

I resent this, laptops have short lives and cannot be upgraded easily.
Build build build.
I did well with a 1000$ budget, if you need any sort of help send me a message.
If it doesn't boot the first time, you probably fucked up the LED wiring. go back, read the MOBO manual and wire it right, dingus :D

Yes.

Give me your budget and I'll give you a parts list.

Heres my suggestion. Keep your old HDDs and use them and then buy this.

Fractal Design Define R4
XFX Core Edition FX-787A-CNFC
CORSAIR Professional Series HX650
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB)
GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-D3H
Intel Core i5-3570K

Also assuming you're not already on Win7 with 64bit OS
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6832116986

Assuming you already have Win7 64bit on your HDD then get this instead and move your windows files to it

EDIT: Almost forgot, seeing how you were going to buy a AW computer I take it you're never built one before. This video could be helpful.

Laptops aren't exactly meant to be full blown gaming machines and they are obviously very convenient if you need a mobile computing source or expect to move often.

Also, not all laptops have short lives. I'm 5.5 years into owning this Lenovo Thinkpad T61p and I am very happy with it for the time being. That said, I would endorse the Lenovo Thinkpad line bceause my particular model was so good and I've heard similar praise for the newer models.
I got tired of looking at Drawed's face.
