MedRed's Carmegeddon Computer Build

Talk about random stuff that has nothing to do with TF2 or other games.

MedRed's Carmegeddon Computer Build

by MedRed » Sun Sep 30, 2012 3:15 am

Nothing like a day of college football and computer guts while the freeways are a mess. This is going to replace my server. It didn't start out being so powerful, but things got out of hand.

I'm not planning to do a major overclock, but It's definitely built up to where I can if need be.

I had a super hard time sourcing the case. It was discontinued close to two year ago. I bought the very last one Performance PCs had in stock. On water, this rig has the propensity to pass the speed and performance of Ice Cube. I may decide to put this tank on water in a way that will make it look like a mad science project with custom reservoirs. For now, I'll keep it simple.

Case: Lian Li Pitstop PC-T1B
CPU: Intel I5 3750K
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-I Deluxe
Memory: 8GB (2x 4GB) Corsair Vengeance LP 1600 MHz
Video Card: ATI Radeon 5770
Hard Drive: 2 Terabyte Western Digital Caviar Black
PSU: Kingwin Lazer 850W (modular)
CPU Heatsink: CNPS9900 Max B

This is all there is to the case:

I've already decided the 5770 has to go. I doesn't match. luckily the board has video. Gotta scout out a nice matching card now.

I've actually completed everything at this point, but I'll wait until tomorrow to post. Installing windows now.

Back in my day our computer cases were rectangular boxes.

I'm still using an AMD Phenom II, DDR2 and a 4870 ;_; I'll probably make my next upgrade once DDR4 boards come out provided they're not stupid expensive for the relative advantage

i realized a long time ago that building a nasty rig for what's available at the time will still give you at least 5 good years of well above average performance. I know longer wait for the next thing unless it's game changing (like I won't buy a new laptop until it supports 802.11ac.)

This modest build has exceeded my expectations! I still have a few cosmetic changes to make as well as picking out a new video card for it. I got busy today, so I wasn't able to take pictures in good lighting. I won't leave you hanging though. Here's a teaser. I won't be back home until later in the week. I'll post some shots then.

Your computer case is a "test bench"? Do you keep it away from hazards such as spills, animals, or other people?

first you're going to have to have interactions with people, animals, and spills.

Hi internet.

Well it would be an awesome case for cooling based exposure to open air w/out any enclosure at all. I can remember at least one time where I spilled water all over the place, would definitely not be the setup for me.

no pets other than fish... and I posted pics of my other two open air cases. I've never even been in a situation where my cases have been exposed to something they shouldn't be exposed to.

Sorry for the delay, folks. I was out of town all week. Here is the almost finished product!

I was browsing the aisles in my local Fry's and came across som awesome wifi antennas. I like how long they are. I still need to find a video card that matches the case. I don't need a crazy card. I may go with a 6000 series Radeon.

As you can see in the dark pic, the case has two red LEDs for eyes. They are currently powered by a 4 pin molex connector. I'd like to banish the modular molex cable from the case completely and turn those two LEDs into functional lights for the HD and Power indicators. Red doesn't go will with the case. I'm going to try purple, blue, and white and see which color I like the best.

I also would like to source another cable management bracket to get my wires cleaned up a little better.

I'll take more pics including real illuminated shots as soon as I complete everything.

All in all this was a super easy build and I love the case. I am open air for life. Open air cases are so much easier to manage.

The Phenom II line is still very capable.

I'm running the 3.2 Dual core black edition which works astonishingly well really.
