Finger's trivia [power transformer, 208 tons]

by fingerman » Sat Jun 23, 2012 8:33 am

Image

Two Trivia Questions:

1. What is this? (the thing on the truck)
2. How much does it weigh? (in U.S. tons; 1 ton = 2000 lbs)

Only post once in this post with the two answers above. I will find a winner based on getting the first question right, then finding the closest winner without going over for the second question.
Winner gets 3 hats and 5 strange weapons. I will choose the winner on Sunday morning (6/24/12).
If two people guess the correct answer somehow (very unlikely) I will take the first posted one.
Anyone is eligible to win.

UPDATE *I am going to delete guesses that are not serious*

Originally I was gonna guess an engine but even if it was electric there doesn't seem to be any moving parts. The pipes suggest water. I'm gonna guess that it's a pump of some sort. Possibly to provide water to the boiler on the steamboat or to Fingerman's nuclear plant.

Probably weighs in at 75ish tons.

Edit: changed my weight after deliberating on it.

I would guess some sort of mechanical structure for larger reason , generator perhaps. However I would say around 36 tons judging on the amount of wheels.

I'm going to guess that it's a water cooled transformer. If it's that, then it's filled with fucking copper wire, probably 30 tons. That's my first guess.

Its probably the reactor at a small nuclear plant. Based on that crawler its on it probably weighs about 100-120 tons. FYI Little trailers like this one can handle 30-40 tons guys.

FYI this thing weights 222 tons and it's basically a gigantic electrical generator filled with magnets and copper, so I don't think it's 150 unless it's filled with lead on the inside. Just not big enough.

I'm sticking with my transformer guess given the tire load, although I'm probably undershooting the weight some (on purpose). Boilers are empty cylinders, so they just can't weight that much.

I cant guess what exactly it is by looking at it but i know crawlers like that could hold bigger things than locomotives so it appears even my weight guess is a huge underestimate. It is possible it has uranium inside of it :I

I didn't see that but I suppose it could be a generator for a locomotive. But I don't think a generator would need pipes that big for cooling. I think I'll stick with my original pump guess, but It could be applied to a modern train as well.

My guess is some sort of generator or cooling chamber for something nuclear, clearly. 20 tons?

I'm going to go ahead and guess it's a giant powder coating oven and weighs 2 tons.

Wandering Minstrel guesses it's a spacecraft that weighs 12 tons which I appreciate because she is just looking at the picture from across the room as opposed to reading the forums. I don't know if you care about counting her guess.

Also, having seen a nuclear reactor, I'm not really sure where I would put a box like this. On the other hand, I've never assembled a nuclear reactor so maybe I just don't know. Also we can only see two sides, one of which is flat, so it's hard to tell anything.

Maringue wins.

It is a power transformer used to convert power from our generator to 345,000 Volts. This is actually 1 of 4. We got 4 of them from Korea this week. Each one weighs 417,000 lbs which roughly 208 tons. It will be 513,000 lbs after it is fully assembled.

Damn I wouldn't have guessed it was that heavy but I was definitely closer when I was thinking engine. How you you keep your reactors cool then? You've got to have a huge pump to move the water around the uranium rods.

P.S- Holy fuck that thing must need a lot of water to keep it cool. How big are those pipes? 24inches? It's hard to tell looking from the side.

They are usually filled with mineral oil that cools them. The picture is one that is unassembled, there is a lot of stuff that gets attached to it later.
