Basically, Microsoft is making new hardware, intended to compete with Apple. Again.
Because as we all know, the Zune and the Windows Phone were incredibly successful in stealing some of Apple's market share.

Seriously, why are they trying to do hardware again? It never turns out well for them. In fact, Microsoft is usually a day late and a dollar short when it comes to anything not software-related. Even in the wake of Android and the open-source movement, Windows is still a very popular OS on mobile PC's and tablets. Why rock the boat? It's like Steve Ballmer is asking for bankruptcy.

This actually doesn't look like a bad idea. I'll explain.

See, tablets for me are worthless because I have a 4G smartphone with a big enough screen to do whatever and it fits in my pocket. So yeah, I don't need something bigger that doesn't make phone calls and can't fit in my pocket.

Buuuuuuut, it's not a bad idea because tablets are made to replace or compete with laptops in terms of function and portability. I'll be honest, I still remember the live video where Steve Jobs started typing on his iPad. One of my co-works immediately said, "Wow, that is not fast enough". The keyboard idea is actually great. The problem I have with typing on touch screens is that they can't keep up with typing speed, but a keyboard won't have that problem.

Basically, this is not meant to only compete with the iPad. It's meant to compete with laptops and iPads. I know a lot of people who use their iPads for work just like a laptop and I think they would prefer this a lot because of the keyboard.

For one they make the Xbox which I think is safe to say was a success for the company. Also they're making the windows tablet because no one else wanted to make them.
