Video cards, what's what?

Video cards, what's what?

by Maringue » Tue Nov 08, 2011 4:23 pm

Ok, so I need to invest in a new video card. In doing a little bit of looking around, I found out that I have no fucking clue how to differentiate one card from another or which ones are better. So I'm looking to you awesome folks to help me figure out how you can tell which card has better performance.

I'd like to keep this whole operation under $200, so here are two that I found that I have no idea how to decide between.

After the rebates, these two are only about $20-30 apart. Is the more expensive one worth it? And if you have other suggestions in this price range, please let me know and try to explain why or how they are better than a competing card.

I'll help you pick cards if you want to message me on Steam, but those two cards are about as different as cards can be; they're opposite chipsets.
I refuse to use
    Soda Popper
    Liberty Launcher
    Axtinguisher; Phlogistinator
    Stickybomb Launcher
    Tomislav
    Pomson 6000
    Quick Fix
    Bushwacka; Machina
    Enforcer; Spycicle

on CSn servers.
I don't expect you to, but I appreciate those of you that do.

Can you post your system info? Using CPU-Z: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

Something to note, Fermi GPUs are known to be powerhogs and require substantial cooling if you want to use them effectively. I've had one for a about a year now and haven't had a single issue with it, but it might require more care.

I have a GTX 460, and though Crysis hates it, I like it. Though if you're gonna go nVidia, I would just go ahead and get the 560, since you can get one for $200 (your budget price).

So it turns out they only put a 350W power supply into this computer, so that's going to need replacing as well...
