Shot it with a Canon D10 (I think.... we've had it for a while, twas a gift from my Dad's brother) with a 50mm lens. It probably looks odd because I had to become one with the wall to get the angle I wanted. Probably not the best idea to wear a white shirt while doing that, but I think it was worth it.

*edit* Asked my brother since I'm not at home. Tis an EOS 7D.
*edit2* I was lied to. An EOS 10D it is. For srs this time.

With this first image we're using some color correction to change the tone. Your eye is naturally drawn to the tree limb but the focal point is just beyond that, not sure if that was the intention or not but it ends up being a tiny bit frustrating. I burned the surrounding leaves down a bit, they were quite bright in the original image and a little distracting. Also added a vignette to enhance the "tunnel" effect. There's no right way to do anything of course but this shows you a few different options you can use to change the style or feel of a photo.

Image
No crop and a little saturation on this one. Depth of field is a great tool but at times you still want distance the subject from the background so that it doesn't become lost, an example is the shot below.

Image

Image
This shot's focal plane just barely hit the back end of that first log. Grrrr. This has had the effect of making me apprehensive. Successful art is successful since it garnered an emotional response. Desaturate, grain, crop. Makes me feel less like the world is ending. Again just another example of how we can use post to change the overall effect of a photo.

Image
I tried to narrate this one on the image but I spelling fail so.. Yeah. More color correction here. I wanted the dirt/clay to look a bit wet, bitches love wet.

Most of the 'mistakes' (for lack of better word) aren't intentional. I can't say I'm too happy with most of what I took, since we only had 20 minutes to get 20 shots. If there's one thing I can't stand with regards to photography, it's being rushed. That being said, I just got my first out of class assignment, so I should be getting some actually decent shit up within the next week or so.

On a side note, what are some free editing programs I can use while I try to get my hands on PhotoShop?

*edit* Totally forgot to say thanks. So... Danke, Jake <3

GIMP is decent but its user interface is fucked compared to photoshop.http://www.gimp.org/
It can do 99% of what photoshop can, but at times it's hard to translate the "how" part of tutorials or even conversations about photoshop to GIMP's UI (in my opinion).

Taking pictures is EZ.

Step 1. Find something.
Step 2. Don't take a picture from where you saw it.
Step 3. Take the picture.
Step 4. Erase your picture because it is most likely crap.
Step 5. Take another picture, but this time it will turn out good.
Step 6. Be confuzzled on why it turned out well.

Repeat

Since Rustic is obviously very new to photography, I think it would be awesome if we instead of just posturing in his thread, gave him some help. You could tell him about the lighting setup you used in the Rock, Paper, Scissor picture. Or how if you had to do post on your landscape photo again, what you would do different in order to make it better. You've got some good pictures there, in order for us to appreciate your work better, you could post your own thread.

It's EZ bro. Like any art, the basics need to be learned before the "art" can take place. For example, a child cannot just draw without knowing how to use a pencil. Once the tool is understood, only then can its purpose be fulfilled. A camera is nothing more than a tool. It by itself cannot create art. Now that we have that philosophical spiel out of the way, let's get down and dirty on making apples a better photographer.

First step, know the basics of photography. Light is the most important thing. Without light, you do not have an image. Thus, manipulating light with the camera should be the most important thing on the list of things to do.

What do I recommend to do? Wiki shutter speed and aperture. Once you got that down, take ten pictures of a lightbulb with varying shutter and aperture settings. UNDERSTAND why each picture turned out the way it does. (I don't want to hear, "well f1.8 is smaller than f3.2 so that means uhhhhhh more light?") Sure, your pictures won't come out nice but this is the boring shit (unless you're boss like me and get picked calumet photo of the week taking pictures of lightbulbs).

Image

You deal with the crap now and you won't have to later. A painter doesn't think about how his paint brush works when he's painting. You shouldn't have to think about what settings your camera is at to get the picture you want.

And yes, this is an assignment. So I want TEN PICTURES OF LIGHTBULBS IN THIS MUTHAFKCING THREAD SOON. Or else Jake and I are gonna go duckyroo on your ass.
