Support for Sandman

Talk about random stuff that has nothing to do with TF2 or other games.

Support for Sandman

by HibiscusKazeneko » Mon Sep 12, 2011 10:56 pm

A while ago, Benny and I were discussing in chat what we can do to rally support for Sandman. I proposed we organize something like the equivalent of a signed greeting card and deliver it to him. In addition, I proposed that we gather donations for the American Diabetes Association.
Any other suggestions or thoughts?

I'm negligent to get the Valve staff involved because we're not a very large community and I don't know how prominent a gamer Sandman is.

I was thinking of having an admin starting a picture of something near a greeting card and posting it on the forums. Then all the users will download it, write their name on it, and upload it again. Then it will keep going until the whole picture gets signed.

Fingerman and I were just discussing that. We could all send in picture files of our signatures, then someone could piece them together in whatever program (Paint, Photoshop, GIMP, etc.), print them and place it in a card to send to him.

I meant stock. You know. he could sell it and help pay the bills.

I'd advise away from sending game related things to him. But if you need stuff printed let me know.

I thought it was funny as hell. I think sandman needs a laugh, you taking his situation more serious than he is won't help. Let's send him a dozen donuts and then make sure the mail is late or something and then send him the real gift. Gag gifts are good for the hospital.

I'd say let's send him a postcard but everyone knows my postcard would be a few weeks behind.

You do bring up a good point, but there's a very thin line between good and bad taste. It's like giving a package of Nutter Butters to someone with a peanut allergy: it may be funny at first, but you could potentially put that person's life in danger. To make matters worse, if something bad happens to him as a result, you could be held responsible. It's best not to tread on that particular patch of thin ice.

Then how about sending whatever it is we end up sending him inside of a Dunkin' Donuts box with a giant pink ribbon on top (minus the donuts of course).

You make it sound like he's dumb enough to eat them. If I have a peanut allergy and someone gives me food shaped like a peanut or even has nuts in the name I'm pretty sure I'll know what to do.

hey you guyyyyyyyyyyyyysssssssss!, im finally out, unfortunately i have type 1, so i have to take insulin shots then hopefully i can get a nice pump that does it automatically. Basically type 1 differs from type 2 in the sense that my pancreas doesn't create ANY insulin at all, compared to 2 which does, just doesn't use it properly, so im gonna have to manually do it pretty much for the rest of my life. The responses from you guys made me cry xD, thanks for all of the support, no gifts or cards are necessary though, i feel good and am back at my house, where i can relax!

Those implanted pumps are actually getting pretty good. My buddy designs the algorithms that regulate when the pump gives you more insulin, but it's a crazy complex system so it's all kinds of fun.

yea ur right, they want me to start off just by giving myself shots, then later on we will talk about a pump, its basically a little machine u can put in ur pocket or on ur belt, and u put a little patch on ur hip, this will not only pump the insulin wen u need it, but it checks ur blood sugar too.

I'm surprised we don't see more Goonies references from you. Glad you're feeling well; and I wish you luck with diabetes. My first girlfriend was a type 1 diabetic; she seemed really poor about managing her insulin and that was kind of scary and I'm awful about blood so testing blood sugar was always exciting in a nauseating unpleasant sense for me. Pumps are cool.

My friend has that pump. Every w/e you just click a button a couple of times and it pumps insulin into you so you dont have too high/low a blood sugar count
