Movie Night

by Harri » Thu Jul 07, 2011 12:36 pm

I have been holding off on a movie night suggestion until I could offer up my own computer for streaming. I now have decent internet. Is this still a good idea. Do you think there will be enough people interested?

I was thinking about holding a vote on movies. Maybe only host movie night once or twice a month. Also, every few movie nights (or when the movie is nominated or voted) stream an Anime Movie night. No brand new movies and nothing graphic due to our younger members,

What do you think?

Deal. That movie and series is one of my all time favorites. Plus I have it on DVD and MP4 already.

I think she is talking about her being able to watch the movie. She probably is expecting us to A) Own it, B) Buy it, C) rent it, D) stream it like her, or E) pirate that shit

Anywho, great idea Harri. We could even have a discussion about the movie after a certain period of time after we announce the movie of the week. Destructoid does a similar thing with their Movie Night.
EDIT: BTW...

Harri wrote: No brand new movies and nothing graphic due to our younger members

The no new stuff is a given, but I don't think we should restrict the graphic stuff. If the movie is indeed graphic like say, Pulp Fiction, we could just throw up a disclaimer or something.

I will stream it live through http://www.ustream.tv/

or something else. All you have to do is go to a website and watch. The quality is not brilliant, but there is a chat attached to it. So we can cut up and joke around.

Jawohl. With the amount of tits, dicks, and general asshattery we have on these forums, I think that censoring/restricting movie night is going to be like throwing a glass of water into a bonfire.

I think I will put a disclaimer just for a safe measure. Yes, we are too crude of a group to censor things.

Actually. For a Hayao Miyazaki/ Studio Ghibili film I have the brand new The Borrower Arrietty. It is in japanese with subtitles. But, I doubt very many (American/ European/ Canadian) people have seen it yet.

Ditto, though I've seen Spirited Away enough to bash my own face in.

I'm not much of a Subtitle viewer anyway. Dubs ftw.

There is also Ponyo or Howl's Moving Castle. On a side note: the Studio Ghibli films are the only anime I can really get into. I guess that might be attributed to their films being similar to Pixar's, and I'm the biggest Pixar whore on the planet.

If that's the case, I could host it. I practically have a T1 line in my house. Verizon Fios FTW, 45 down, 15 up.

But do you have the card to twice-render a 1920x1080 movie twice over in realtime, and do all the associated processing involved with filtering it through your Livestream client?

Who?

Gurren Lagann? Diacon V? They're famous for their impressionist artstyle that manages to compete with hyper-realistic studios without following their trend.

My problem with Anime in general is the amount filler, the convoluted story lines in some series, the pretentiousness of those same series (Neon Genesis Evangelion), and the rabid fanbase that comes with it that won't shut the fuck up.

I saw the Cowboy Bebop movie once with the volume muted and Godspeed You! Black Emperor's F-sharp, A-sharp, Infinity cranked up on the stereo. It was profound.

3 series with absolutely 0 episodes of filler (IE, every episode is plot-relevant and contains vital development)
Gurren Lagann
Romeo x Juliet
Code Geass (it has 1 filler episode in the 1st season, but every other episode is really like 3 episode's worth of events packed into one, so it makes up for it in spade)

^animated by Gainax, Gonzo, and Clamp, respectively.

As for convoluted story lines, there's not much you can do for that but stick to simple mass-media stuff like Bleach or DBZ if you aren't a fan of intricate plot.

Also, fanbases are only there when you look for them; the 360 has a rabid fanbase I'm sure, but I just make it a point not to cross paths with them.

Do not lie to this poor boy. Gurren Lagann is filler and Code Geass is absolute shit thanks to the fanbase.

Edit: Gurren Lagann is not complete filler but it does have filler and the last few episodes were stupid.

OPINIONS: people have them. My basis for saying that GL isn't filler is that there isn't a single episode you could remove without having everyone noticing a massive gap in events; not like Bleach where you can basically cut out the entire Bount arc without losing a god damn thing.

As for Code Geass, if you hate their fanbase so much, why not avoid them? I avoid fanboyism and fangirlism on principle myself.

It's not slated to come out for a long time. Plus there are going to be 2 separate dubs: one for the US and one for the UK, each featuring new stars they're trying to promote.

Ok, I'll do one when I get home. Unless I go out for beers at happy hour, in that case I will get drunk and forget. Then I might do it tomorrow.

Don't be throwing the best hacker movie featuring Matthew Broderick and the hot Ally Sheedy if you don't really mean it. I have a pretty decent 720 mkv rip of it and respectable upload speeds.

I totally remembered to get a speed test screen shot! Is this connection good enough to host movie night?

I think a drinking game to every time Oh Hai is said will be great. Or when he laughs. That movie is so bad. It is hilarious.
