So Falling Skies aired yesterday. Had me thinking a bit. What would I do if aliens did invade and I survived. This isn't a review of the show. Love it or hate it, good sci-fi is hard to come by. And in this day and age their can't be a full logic stream involved. For instance, if an alien race did decide to invade Earth and irradiate most of the indigenous population. They'd never put boots on the ground. Interstellar travel and you'd need mechs? No. You'd bombard from space. A lot simpler and less resource intensive. Also why even bother? Any resource on Earth can be found elsewhere, and probably easier to get than a planet with 7+ billion people on it. But let's assume they were sick of watching old transmissions of Jersey Shore and decided to put us out of our own misery. A more logical stance would be a greater conflict we humans were unaware of. And the Earth makes a good base of operations. Or they were fearful of who we act, and wanted to prevent future issues. Or maybe they just like child slaves. Who knows.
So the premise of this game. You start where ever you currently live. What would you do, how would you get there, and how would you survive?
Following the Falling Skies premise:
The military is gone, as well as 90% of the world population. Electronic devices are dead. Any car post fuel injection/computers no longer work. There is no electricity and the aliens have placed resources in places they think the remaining humans will go to get supplies. You should be more fearful of other survivors. Many don't know how to survive w/o modern day technology. Some are OK, others are looking for "easy" supplies.
My plan:
Essentially I'm screwed to begin with. I live 10 minutes west of downtown Chicago. Considering Downtown is a soft target. There aren't a ton of people there, and a lake a few miles to the east. Any attack on the city would probably be closer to my front door step. IE during the cold war days I lived within 300 yards of a projected Soviet nuclear strike. A bomb dropped on the city itself would go mostly into the lake. 10 miles in and you get the city plus most of the suburbs.
I also have a family to contend with. No mean of communication I'd probably hunker down for a bit. No sense in trying to escape to somewhere when everyone else would be trying to do the same thing. Being in a big group of survivors has its benefits. But I think there are far to many downsides. Most would be useless and just hold others back. Biding my time, I'd probably live a bit longer. Survive off whatever leftovers were in my neighborhood. If scavenging for supplies I'd first hit restaurants. Grocery stores would be cleared out, and trapped most likely. I'd search for as much salt as possible. Any caught food could be cured and kept for later. Would also be a good trading tool if I ran into anyone else in the future. There's an army reserve base near me. I don't think it'd be a huge target. It's not an army base in the traditional sense. Probably 9 buildings. They store an maintain military vehicles. I'm sure if safe, there would be something useful there.
Upon moving I'd first travel about 20 miles west. This would probably take 2 or 3 days to be safe. If it seemed remotely save, and possible. I'd search for either dirt bikes or ATVs. Can move quicker and carry more supplies. From there up to northern Wisconsin. I have a nice cottage in the middle of nowhere. There's a lake with fish, deer, and it's already been sorta turned into a zombie apocalypse safehouse. Assuming anyone else in my family, or friends, survived. They'd probably also be trying to make it there.
