Harri wrote:I do have a story. This happened when I was around 12 or 13. I used to play on Neopets all the time. I was a nerd child, give me a break. Anyways, I had this friend nicknamed Night in a neopets guild thingy (I forget what they are called). (My nickname was still Harri). We became really good friends over the internet. We even shared addresses and wrote letters to each other. My parents never knew. I was a very self-conscience, and easily embarrassed, child. I didn't have too many IRL friends from school (all-girl Catholic school, worst years of my life). So Night was a little girl's dream come true.
Night's real name is Kathleen. She lives (lived) in Chicago. I had just turned 13 and my parents were planning our annual family visit to Chicago. I agreed with her in a letter that we should meet. It never occurred to me that I should have been cautious, or inform my parents, or even to be afraid of Night. I thought Night was my age, my gender, and over-all compatible to me. When we arrived at my Uncle's house I worked hard to get a chance to be alone out in Chicago. I got my very hip Uncle to take me to Field (which he is head curator at) and I was allowed free range. I met my friend Night at Field.
This isn't a horror story. Night (Kathleen) was everything she claimed to be. She is still my best friend. I love her dearly. My parents have met her. They still have no clue that I met her over the internet.
But, it was a dumb thing for me to do at that age. Don't do that little kids.

I wasn't going to write out any of my meeting internet people stories since they're pretty bland compared to what Ackybur was looking for but Sirnak has inspired me. I couldn't disagree more with feelings on meeting and associating with people over the internet. That doesn't make him wrong of course but I simply choose to live my life with a different outlook when it comes to my interactions with people. I don't feel that proximity has anything to do with the quality of a person or a friendship. It changes the way you interact with people certainly but not who they are or what they mean to an individual.
I've played in and have known a group of guys in a multi-gaming community for about 9 or 10 years now. I lived a few hours away from several of the members. One of the guys told me he was going to be in my city in a week or two so I told him he could crash at my place and we could hang out at my store and play after it closed. I invited 2 other guys to stay and we picked up a 5th from the gaming community. We scrimmed till 3am and had a great time. My girlfriend brought us pizza and we hung out, told jokes and played all night. It was a fucking blast. He left in the morning and that was that. I haven't seen him since, although we have spoken hundreds of times. No drama, good times and I'd absolutely consider him my friend.
You are the kind of person you want to be. You can be closed and detached or you can be open and receptive. I can't pretend I know the friends who I see every couple of weeks any better than those I see once a year or who I've only ever met once. I'd never met a work associate from our sister store located in New York until I flew up there one year for WCG and he treated my partner and I very warmly, much more than coworkers or acquaintances. Just because our interactions had previously been relegated to conference calls and emails didn't mean he regarded us in a cold impersonal way.
tl:dr - Shit was good. Hung out with internet friend. Lulz were had. LAN > internet + scrim. Met business buddy in NY. Awesome time. Drunk hanging out with Torbull and the team, good times.
p.s. I hear the internet is where the kids pick up all the chicks now, gotta get with the times Sirnak.

We'll be the least productive people, just playing video games all day, probably still using mumble.
