So, I tried doing this ages ago, but no one asked serious questions. Anywho, standard thread. Ask a question, get an answer. Subject? Okinawa, Japan. This thread is srs bzns, so be srs. kthxbai.

Have you met Mr Miyagi yet? If so, has he tricked you into waxing all his cars?

How's the weather there? Being on the ocean, does it not vary much depending on season?

Noodles. On a U.S. Military base which is inside of a city, although the entire island is so small that it might as well be one giant city, since each spot of the island is used to my knowledge. No and no. And yes, just got hit with a typhoon. Boom, answered 4 questions in one post.

Yes.

According to Wikipedia, "Torii were traditionally made from wood or stone, but today they can be also made of reinforced concrete, copper, stainless steel or other materials." There ya go.

Are you on base or off? I might have an opportunity to go and live in Okinawa so I'm trying to determine the suck factor for living off base. Also, how are you coping not knowing the language? Are you aware of any privacy laws? Something that might effect me as a photographer?

I live on-base, but most people I talk to say off is better. The prices are higher for bills and such, but at least you have a variety of choices of ISPs. On base you have exactly one, and it sucks ass. I don't know much about privacy laws, however. Google might be your friend on this one.

Totally unrelated to anybody's questions, but a small fun fact: Karate was invented on Okinawa.

You know nothing about Japan, yet you live in it, you're all American "these colors don't bleed" and yet the only real experience you have with "America" is shitty technology that appears even shittier in the shadow of Japan... lol! My best friend lives in Tokyo, he gets fiber for $40/mo (equivalent)... 2mb/s and we're talking real bytes not bits. Seriously though, is it just like "Little America" on your island? Kind of like how we have Little China or Little Mexico in cities in the US? How long have you lived over there? Do you remember (if you were born here) or ever been to the US? Have you seen any 10ft long salamanders or tennis ball sized bees?

I don't know about privacy laws, but Japanese copyright law is a total pain in the ass. There is no fair use clause, so you can't even post, say, screenshots of a game you're playing or a photo of a celebrity without being subjected to severe penalties.

Also, I REALLY need to ask you this: how are you treated as an American living on a much-disliked military base? I imagine it carries a huge stigma, considering a certain incident in 1995 (four active-duty US Marines stole a van, then used it to kidnap and rape a 12-year-old girl) on top of the overall hateful attitude the Japanese population has towards foreigners.

Okay, I think I phrased something wrong when I said I don't know jack shit about Japan. I do know stuff, just nothing related to people, anime, music, or anything else like that. Culture, however, I do. These actually is a Little America not too far from base called Mihama, aka American Village. I was born in the U.S. and lived there from age zero to last December. Neither of those, but I have seen some freaky shit underwater. And no, I just have a regular ass tub.

Well, you would be surprised.... If you broadened that out to be just any well endowed females, it happens pretty often.

I really do try to absorb as much Japanese culture as I can, be it traditional or modern, but music is not where I succeed. Yes, there certainly is JPop here as well as the radio station accompanying it, but it's not like I can ever tell who is singing. On the concert question: Naha is no Tokyo, so concerts rarely happen here, and if they do, they are put on by the USO. If I wanted to see one, I would have to hop on a plane. Now, onto the serious question. Yes, people here don't understand why were here nor want us here. I don't even know why were still here, let alone Germany, Italy, etc. However, compared to mainlanders, the Okinawan people are really nice people. I have never met one who sneered or gave a dirty look. Granted, they make be cursing my family or willing doom upon me and my country in Japanese, but they ACT nice.
