If it hit a state with a large Democrat population (like Florida), Pat Robertson would have said it's the will of God. Now that natural disasters are laying waste to the bible belt and anyone who's voted against gay rights, he's pretty fucking quite.

But apparently it's not a problem for the religious conservatives in this country if the actual words of Jesus don't agree with their message, they can still spin it on Fox News.

I don't really understand this progressively selective counter hatred of this church. If looked at objectively their views on the world stem from the most literal interpretations of the modern Christian bible. I can understand Maringue's feelings on the matter and while the utopian peace-loving Christianity is one that's been most popularized lately, the truth of the matter is that supposing God exists and he is the Judeo-Christian form that most of us identify with the bible, he's filled with the hateful sentiments that the WBC members make very public.

What WBC does is pick out a single line from an entire book, kind of the definition of taking something out of context.

But with a vehicle so flawed by contradiction, I can't see how they're any better or worse than a church whose message is one of love, yet chooses to ignore all of the hatred present in the canon.

The Merchant of Venice is hardly the biblical reference I would have chosen, I would have taken Matthew chapter 4 verse 5 through 7. That's when the devil told Jesus to throw himself from the temple and being the son of god, the angels would save him from death. Jesus' rebuttal only further exposes the fallibility of the scripture since his reply is simply "You don't test god". Despite the double edged nature I feel it sums up the contextual issues of the bible quite well being an internal reference and all.

You have to remember that my sentiment isn't determining whether they are nice people or not. Only that they choose to follow a path less appreciated by modern christianity. A prime example is their understanding of Orthodox Christians and Catholics methods of worship. They feel it constitutes idolatry and as such it must be condemned.

I echo your feelings on hypocrisy in religion but the truth as I see it is that it's impossible to remain consistent when your source material is the bible.

There are things we can all do to prevent their message from becoming a public one. I'm not sure that it really makes a difference but I often call my congress person to talk about issues I feel are important to my community and state.

I entertain the thought that perhaps in some way I make a difference in those issues, but that's part of the process. It's cathartic that I attempted to help, not so much that there was a definite result; although it's often the case when supporting the EFF that there is a favorable result.
I'm not personally advocating opposing the WBC, I just meant to say that there is always something (not necessarily an effective something) that can be done.

Just to remain consistent we will also use google's definition of faith as it pertains to this discussion.
Strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

Examples -
I am Jake. I have a profile on a bbw dating website. It believe that I will get a date with a pretty, ruddy cheeked, thick calved girl. - This is logic. My belief makes sense in the context of the environment that I am operating in. My profile is directed towards the specific target group that I'm interested in and I have good facial symmetry and eat box like it's going out of style. It is logical to think that I will get a date.

I am Jake still. I have a profile on a TF2 gaming forum. I believe that I will get a date with a pretty, ruddy cheeked, thick calved girl. - This is faith. My belief isn't dependent on a connection between my intent and my environment, it's based on how I arbitrarily feel about it.
