Should I move OS to solid state?

Talk about random stuff that has nothing to do with TF2 or other games.

Should I move OS to solid state?

by Failhorse » Fri Apr 08, 2011 10:40 am

So I've been researching a bit, and I think I may actually want to do this.
I hear there's some issues with imaging the OS to a SSD.
Currently i have a meager 10k rpm HD.
I'm looking for a bit of a performance increase. Not in gaming, but other things i need to do for work. (running Maya, video editing, and Solid Works.)

Is it worth it? How much of a pain in the ass is it to image Win7?

OS? Overreacting soldier?
SSD? Super sensitive demoman?
rpm HD? rotation per medic high quality?

What is all that gibberish?

Just do a clean install. Not worth the headache of mirroring if it doesn't work perfectly.

Will i actually see a performance improvement?
I also use a dev copy of win7. Know i have the disc, don't know what i might have put the code.

definitely. The question will be if it's worth the cost. There's a significant difference in boot time and loading for various programs. You'll probably notice that fingerman or myself will load into a room faster than most others on average. You'll definitely notice the speed bump, they're just pricey.

Do IT!

On another note... what do you think about adding a west coast server? I'd love for my ping to be less than 80-100 on a regular basis.

Then you'll only get faster boot times, and your My documents will open faster, assuming they're on the C drive. Personally I keep my PC on all the time, so moving to a SSD wouldn't help me. Don't know if you also do that, but quite a few people do.

What is all that gibberish?

OS=Operating system (Windows, Mac OS, etc.)
RPM=revolutions per minute
HD=hard drive
SSD=solid state drive (like a hard drive except it has no moving parts and is more compact)

any reason why you'd only run the OS on it? With SSD prices coming down, by the time you used up the write quota enough to degrade performance, you'd be able to buy a new one. I run any of the programs that can benefit from speed bumps on my SSD. I don't do any downloading or document storage on it though.

I have 3 ssds, I have 2 corsair 120 gig and 1 ocz 64 gig one. I use my corsairs on my main computer and my laptop. It really helps with a laptop. SSDs are faster and use less power. They do not get hot. My computer and laptop boot win7 in about 7-10 seconds. You would never go back to a regular hd for your boot. My next dream is to have a revodrive. I could boot windows in about 2 seconds. Revodrive uses pci-e so you have to have a motherboard that will allow you to boot to that.

Agreed, personally I wouldn't buy a SSD for windows, I'd buy it for my steam drive, if that.
