Need to kill a XP box

by Maringue » Wed Mar 23, 2011 10:40 am

Ok, my girlfriend's mom is tossing her computer and wants all the data gone first. I tried to format the system drive a few ways, windows utility, dos prompt, bios menu. None worked. Short of buying a big magnet and sticking it next to the drive, is there a straight forward way to format the system drive? Keep in mind that I don't have access to a windows install CD, which is apparently how the man on the internet told me how to do it. It's frustrating because I thought you could format through a bios menu option, but this is a Korean computer and it doesn't give me that option.

Any help out there? Can it be this hard to wipe a system drive clean?

Ok, found the system drive, so just running a format/recovery which should do the trick.

But, let's pretend I didn't have a system disk. Is there still a way to format the system drive then?

You can recover information from that. If you want to destroy her secret porn stash pull out the HD and destroy it. There is no other way

Bone crushing magnets FTW. Explosives are always a viable option.

Actually you can do a full format which will set all data on the drive back to 0, quick formats however just slap a special character in front of the data (so does just deleting files) that lets the drive know that data can be written over when it needs space

I personally have a large sub-woofer magnet for this purpose. Anytime I toss out a hard drive, it gets a friendly introduction to Mr MASSIVE B-Fields before I toss it out.
