A Royal Pain

So windows decided to download and install an update. This is fine by me, I'm all for updates, but this is what happened this time I updated:

  • Windows shuts down after installing updates
  • Grub (boot loader for ubuntu/windows) breaks because Windows writes to the MBR and messes it up.
  • I now need to load an Ubuntu livecd to reinstall grub.
  • I do not have a CD drive installed (usually don't need 'em). I turn off my computer and plug it in.
  • Ubuntu boots and I reinstall grub by mounting my drives and running grub-install.
  • I now attempt to reboot my computer. One problem: Windows didn't like what Grub did so decides it wants to misread the system clock by a factor of 60. Animations, timers, the entire Windows interface is 60x too fast, so a minute passes as a second, an hour as a minute, etc. No good.
  • I shut down again and take out my system clock battery. This usually fixes the problem.
  • After replacing the battery, my computer won't boot. It doesn't like having 4GB of memory in at once when the system clock isn't set.
  • I take out one of my memory sticks and boot into the BIOS, to set the time.
  • Shutting down the computer again, I replace the memory stick I had taken out.
  • Finally, I can reboot into Windows.

*sigh*
