Completely off topic, but there is actually a logical reason for this. Tax Breaks. Why? Because not everyone gets them. If there was a flat tax rate with no exemptions for stuff like mortgage payments and such, then they would just pay you X% less and not charge you any taxes. But, since there are about 4000 different deductions and no one qualifies for all of them, they have to go with the current system.
