New computer parts arriving tomorrow!

Talk about random stuff that has nothing to do with TF2 or other games.

New computer parts arriving tomorrow!

by Vivi Hill » Sun Sep 25, 2011 11:18 am

Just ordered a new CPU, Mobo, memory and a hard drive.

i5 2500K cpu
MSI mobo
1TB Seagate
8GB DDR3 G.SKILL

Total with a mail in rebate is $408, w/ free shipping.

Using my preexisting case, graphics card (GTX 280) and power supply. Finally I shall be able to play tf2 at a decent framerate (and other things like DX:HR)!

Good value for a rig there Benny. You should have no trouble playing TF2 on that, and at the price of a mid-end laptop, too!

I'm more of a high-end parts person, myself, but all the same, that's a lot of capability for such a low price.

Mobo is kinda like mine, seems like. Mine is MSI 870A-G54. (it's for AMD CPUs) It's pretty nice. I like it.

I should get more RAM sometime. It's pretty cheap now. I can get my RAM again for $32. (2x2GB DDR3 1600 PC3 12800)

Yeah I was looking at the i7 and it didn't seem worth it to upgrade to hyperthreading, a tiny higher clock and tiny bit better L3 cache for $100 more. I look forward to trying an overclock later on as well.

But really I've always been a medium-range person--I've been running with an AMD X2 5400+ Dual Core 2.81 GHz for the longest time now. It makes sense to upgrade now. TF2 has gotten even worse lately and it's no longer fun to play on my system (sadly enough). I can't wait to play tomorrow (assuming I can assemble it by then...). I imagine I'll be pretty bad as I get used to the brand new absence of lag!

Hyperthreading is completely boss, and worth the extra cash in my opinion, but it doesn't help you play TF2 at all.

My roommate has one with hyperthreading (I think it's an i7) and it's certainly neat, but yeah, the stuff I do on my computer doesn't really require 8 'cores' (or at least it isn't worth $100 for my usage).

Meanwhile, it's "Out For Delivery", woo hoo!

I know what you mean. I've been using a 5800+ dual core 3.0GHz for way too long. My FPS is all over the place. :?

har har har.

Anyway it's nice to be able to play GTA IV again--I had stopped because the FPS was unbearable. And TF2 is pleasant. I still haven't installed the new HD yet.

If you find yourself wanting some bumpmapped skins now that you can render in HDR without burning frames like a stack of lit thermite in a photo gallery, let me know!
