I've got a much much much MUCH better one downstairs. 60ish inch 1080p LCD. It's fucking awesome. All it needs is surround sound and it'd be tits.

This is where you and me disagree. I don't give a shit how good a ball player he is, what he did was fucking wrong. Running over a guy is pretty shitty, but at least the kid didn't die. Besides, celebrities ALWAYS get preferential treatment, no matter what some people say. Animal abuse is a far worse crime than running some punk kid over. The dogs didn't do anything wrong, why are they being forced to fight each other? Should he be known only for it? No. Should I be able to make jokes about it? Yes.

I don't understand the philosophical different between birds being held captive in cages for our amusement and dogs being made to fight each other for our amusement. How can you quantify the amount of will we get to impose on an animal. Either we can impose our will, or we can and shouldn't be allowed to.

The problem begins when you start to define abuse. There's no intrinsic right that animals have that we can use to determine if they're being abused or not. I could easily define keeping a bird captive in a cage abusive. Its natural physical ability is restricted and you're disabling it's ability to gather food. If the owner had a heart attack and died, the bird would surely die a slow and painful starvation death. It's not domestication for our food stocks, or to provide labor, it's domestication for entertainment. I feel that there's no way to say one entertainment is any better or worse than another. You bring up a good point though, while I disagree that animals aren't defenseless, we rarely chose to keep captive animals that can defend themselves. If your little dog didn't want to be there, there's very little that it could do about it. As far as keeping animals that can defend themselves against us as pets, there's a long history of them doing so when we try.
