It's acceptable to call a Caucasian person a "cracker-ass cracker" but you can't use the "n" word ever, lest you become a pariah. In my opinion, double standards are always worse than crude racial remarks.

I think you misunderstand the purpose of this PSA. It's obviously aimed at children and teens (the audience for Glee). That audience absorbs more from the media than they do in the classroom. I think it's a smooth way to influence teens to speak to each other in a respectable way. I have and will spank my siblings for saying words like retard, fag, or cunt. It's not something children/teens should say. Coming from someone who has been called a racist/sexist slur term before (on many occasions), it's not fun and it makes you feel very hurt and frustrated. I broke a girls nose for it in high school.
You're adults, I assume, you have a right to decide what to say on your own.

Definition of RETARDED
: slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development or academic progress
The problem between retarded and other slurs is simple. If you analytically look at the definition of retarded (the above one is from Webster and I'm not a fan), which is to slow something down and/or hold something behind normal progression it actually accurately describes the person in question.
Putting any negative connotation onto the word after that is your own problem. When I call someone retarded, I literally mean that this person's mental development has been slowed compared to a person of normal intelligence, the reason for that fact is immaterial. For handicapped people, it's a genetic anomaly or disease. For stupid rednecks, it's ignorance and local societal norms.
I personally don't call mentally handicapped people retarded because, like ethnic origin, the person in question had no say in the matter. However, this is not the case for the normal, healthy people I call retarded. These people are stupid of their own volition and they have no one to blame but themselves, so fuck'em.
And just to be clear, I'm not talking about anyone who disagrees with me. I'm talking about anyone who has no basis in fact or logic for their beliefs or arguments.

Fuck your retarded.

Does that mean it's a smooth way to teach kids to tan their skin orange, drink heavily, fuck, smoke and fight with each other over mundane causes?
In my opinion, the younger generations need to be taught how to have thicker skin, and/or learn how to turn the other cheek. The way I see it, by saying "You know, you really shouldn't say that" you're only encouraging them to say it more by giving a reaction.

Retard: Someone that sucks and can't help it; calling them retarded will let them know how bad they are and they'll hopefully improve. "Ackbar you know you've done nothing this entire game, you must be afk or retarded."
Nigge- Oh wait are you guys actually taking this topic seriously? AAAHHHHH i just bit my lip while eating a carrot... its bleeding T___T

How do you suggest thickening children's skin? It seems like you are suggesting we should teach children how to be apathetic. I think teaching an apathetic attitude is the worst thing we can do for children. Naturally, saying "don't do that," automatically means do it for children. As a child, I was told 'say it at your own risk'. My father didn't care if I cursed. He just said it made me unintelligent. It was a great approach. I was taught that, by saying slur terms, I was depriving my mind the possibility to advance my own vocabulary. But, then again I was raised by a man from a non-American background. Not to sound biased, but American children are the worst.

Sirnak wrote:Srsly? A topic like that again? OK then, I'm gonna repeat myself then...
Words mean nothing. Words are simply a code. What matters is the message behind the code. There are no such things as "harmless words" for ANY word can be used to hurt people. You want me to prove the logic behind my point? Awright. I'll take some examples in this topic. (No offense to anyone; I just want to show an EXAMPLE. I respect any and all people I'll use to illustrate my opinion. In fact, if I use them, it's especially because I respect them.)
Miss Perfect shares her opinion again. Great.
/example finished. These words kinda hurt and are offensive, aren't they? Yet, I only said to Jake he was intelligent and to Harri she was perfect (not much of an insult, is it?). Personally, the insult I received that hurt me the most was, in fact, when a girl called me "Mr. Perfect". What can I do about it? Ask to banish the P-word? I've kept repeating myself on that matter, but as long as people feel the need to express something, they'll find words to suit what they want to say. It's a FACT. You CAN'T deny it. What matters is NOT the word "retard", it's the hatred behind the word.
Don't attack the code. Attack the message... That's what I'll always keep thinking anyway. :/

I will never agree with this, and I think you understand why Sirnak. I do not completely disagree with some of your points, but I do feel that words (some words) are as bad as an actual weapon.
Words are power. They are weapons and tools. Words will linger long past the sting of a physical assault. Words can enthrall, enrage, arouse, and aggravate; they can be the catalyst of a fired bullet. We are beings that have created hundreds of languages to express ourselves. Words themselves carry meaning, because we give them meaning. An example used in this thread is fag. It's an offensive word for many Americans/Canadians, but in Europe it holds a different meaning. No word can be cleansed of it's bad connotation. I will not reclaim cunt because I think it empowers me. I will not reuse spic (spick) to my family because I think it endears our heritage. We articulate our hatred of the 'other' by using words. What separates a well-organized mind from a collection of molecules is our control of words. As you have exemplified for us in your use of perfect and intelligent, words bend and change. Yes they are codes for a deeper meaning, but by using a word to express a hateful meaning you are creating a weapon. Is a gun a code with a deeper meaning? It only carries a past; a reason for why it is used.
There are many different approaches to censoring our language. I believe that words used to hurt cannot be reused. You are only exemplifying your ignorance of that word's origin and purpose. On a scale of severity for hateful words I assume that retard does not rank as high as others. It is likely that, in our lifetime, the word retard will not be redefined as a positive thing. Unless you are looking for a fight, using such words are not suggested.
