Why Doomsday is a terrible map (now with more gripe)

by Failhorse » Mon Jul 02, 2012 11:28 am

For a moment let's ignore the completely barren map. Its distinct lack of detail, and amazing open sight lines that usually disappear when beta testing.

Let's ignore how this new game mode creates a stalemate worse than plr_hightower.

Let's ignore the idea was probably to have 2 areas of conflict. But the intel's 10 second respawn timer puts the action near the cap zone. And due to said timer, which ever team first grabs the intel is most likely going to keep it.

Let's not ignore the Australium. I hear that's in the map.

In the maps essence. Why is the map called Doomsday? We didn't get fancy burnt textures, props, or visions of the end of the TF2 universe. Nothing less than a monkey that was mentioned in a half assed attempt to create some mystery before an update. Essentially Valve took cp_gravelpit and phoned it in. An internal 72 hour mapping contest? Maybe. Doomsday? Well only if this is the future of Valve made maps. I fear the inspiration for Meet the Pyro is bathing Valve in delusions of ...

Screw it. This says everything I need to. Poor monkey, how many times will he die before that bitch of an announcer is satisfied.

I take that back. This says everything.

I haven't tried it yet, but they didn't make it sound very cool in the update notes. Also, you might want to resize that picture, it's fucking with the front page

It's pretty amusing specifically because it IS a clusterfuck, 'least to me.
But fuck sentries and people who play engineer on this map.

Given the hype they built up for Poopy Joe, I don't get why they didn't do something similar to this:

Stage1: Escort Poopy Joe to rocket.

Make it standard attack/defend orientation with BLU attacking and RED defending. Place Poopy Joe in a sort of pre-flight briefing room. Your goal as BLU team is to get to Poopy Joe and then escort him to the rocket. Just have the monkey follow whoever gets to him first. Perhaps very occasionally stopping to fling poo at RED. If the player Poopy Joe is following dies, he runs (Actually runs not just disappears) back to the briefing room and his banana filled cage. We could also, if we felt like mixing it up, limit the attempts BLU has at the escort to 3 or 4. Monkeynaut training ain't fuckin' cheap.

Stage2: Load rocket with Australium fuel.

After Poopy Joe is safe and sound in the rocket the map reverts mostly to what it is now. BLU attempts now to load the rocket with fuel. Instead of the shit they have now, make the rocket platform easier for RED to defend (Perhaps place the launch pad on top of a mesa or spire; something tall) and make getting to the rocket instantly load the fuel. What's different as well is that one delivery of fuel only fills up 1/4 of the tank. After 5 minutes of Stage2 the big, buff Russian monkeynaut (Red: Space Gorilla) comes out of RED's base and wrecks Poopy Joe's day.

If you really wanted to make it interesting you could make Poopy Joe a random member of BLU team and give him shit for health. Now you've got the escort map that everyone's been wanting for the past 5 years and the Special Delivary map type actually feels like a special fuckin' delivery. Just my two cents.

I actually like it. The fact that it's hectic is fun to me. Plus, it reminds me of one my favorite gametypes in Halo, Neutral Assault.

The joke I've been telling about it is the fact that it's pretty much 1 flag CTF combined with the ending of hightower.

The biggest mistake they made was the fact that a good pyro and sniper can make capping the australium near impossible.

It's really fun, but those behind huge rocks by the lift shouldn't have full health/ammo pickups. Perfect engineer nests there just kill the map

Actually all the full health/ammo pickups should get removed, would make it less TDM

It's what I think of every time the Administrator mentions Poopy Joe the monkey.
