Critsandvich TF2Lobby Team?

Put team here!

Critsandvich TF2Lobby Team?

by Vivi Hill » Thu Oct 21, 2010 10:17 am

Is anyone else interested in organizing a TF2Lobby team? Since Plasma mentioned starting a scrim team I figured it might be interesting to at least start with TF2Lobby. Of course we could do other scrims too if we discover that we're really good. TF2Lobby.com is a website that lets you organize competitive matches with other people easily. The skill level is not very high but sometimes you can get good players in it.)

So who's all interested in this? Post here with your favorite scrimming class.

Personally, I'd be interested in Soldier or Medic. I'm not a really good soldier but I'd really like to learn and improve.

Also, with tf2lobby we can be more casual about class selection. So basically we'd only need a group of people who can play together.

The Ranks so far:
  1. Benny Hill - Any class
  2. VoltySquirrel - Pyro, scout
  3. Admiral Ackbar - Scout, Medic
  4. Plasma Waffle - Soldier
  5. dieinafire - Any class
  6. Argent - Scout, Medic
  7. Big Bear - Demo, Soldier
  8. Gho$t - Any class
  9. GoDM1N - Soldier
  10. NuclearWatermelon (Maybe, internet)
  11. theeHankDough - Medic
  12. Enigma - Demo, Soldier
  13. CARNAGE_MK2 - Engineer, Medic

Why not? It's a cool way to sort of spreat our influence in the game.
I'm not the best player, but I don't mind playing. I'm not a bad pyro or scout. So yeah. Just throwing my name in another hat.

I wouldn't mind doing this, and may go a further than a lobby team if it holds up. I'd gladly medic, and I do have a few other people in mind that I wouldn't mind talking to about this. But, honestly a lobby team should be a temporary idea.

Yes ackbar, I agree it should be just a starting point. I figure it's a good way for us to try it out without much effort.

I'd play, but it'd have to be as Medic or Soldier, as those are the only two classes I am decent with thus far.

You know, I'm going to extend my classes to anything really. I'm not a super scout but I can learn, and I tend to think of myself as a decent demoman in pubs. I know I'm horrible at low-damage, accurate demojumps, but again, I can learn. I'm hoping this team can be more laid back and more geared towards not-so-pro scrimmers who want to learn.

In tf2lobby we can also rotate classes and see what works best, as I mentioned.

Good point. If this is to be laid back, then screw it, sign me up for any class, I'll learn, as long as y'all are willing to throw me some pointers :D

I know you're new to TF2, but you're amazingly good considering. Great medic teamwork, and you can hold your own as a heavy too. Of course competitive tf2 is completely different. It's fun to learn.

But we should all expect to lose a couple matches. Can't let that get us down. We'll improve.

In other news, should we make a subforum in TF2 about this? Seems we have a decent amount of interest to make this work nicely.

I've always wanted to try being on a solid team. I dunno what TF2 lobby is, but I'll look at it later when I have time. I could go scout or medic, not that great at demo though. I'd totally give it a shot at any rate.

[[ edit: NaN, "lobby" refers to TF2 Lobby, a 6v6 matchmaking service. http://tf2lobby.com -- register, and put the code they give you in your body of your steam profile (ex. tf2lobby:38538903) ]]
Just wanted to note that I'm always available for Scout mentoring specifically or if you want to go through the basics of 6v6 TF2. Just send me a message on Steam! My profile is steamcommunityblahblah/smeemo if I'm not on your Friends list. [[ edit for NaN: I'm available whenever my status is "Online." :D Typically afternoons and most evenings. ]]
I'm sure we'll find a nice permanent spot for these vids on the site once it's up and running, but for now this space will do. Forsaken, captain of Crit Sandvich-sponsored eC., made these:

Competitive Scout Guide 1/2

Competitive Scout Guide 2/2

I agree with Mangachu. There's a pug channel on IRC where you'd be able to find low teams to play against. Skill levels on Lobby vary wiiiiiiidely.

I know some players are certainly ready for something above scrims but I think TF2Lobby's a good place to start for those people who've never played comp before (since it's completely different).

Hey Benny, the next time you are online maybe we could talk about how to go about getting a community comp team started. It would totally be a good idea not only to get CsN out there, but to let off that steam we all have.

Anyway I've never done a lot of comp TF2 tbh, but the few scrims I did I really didn't see much of a difference, depends on how and who you play with/against I guess.

I could play pocket soldier and rape face, or scout and do mediocre. As most of you know, I was on the eC. team that went undefeated in TWL (not a big deal honestly) but I have more experience than most. Comp is completely different than regular matches, it is more conservative, whereas you don't run in and try to get as many kills until you die, you reserve yourself and push and fall back as a team, it is heavily based on team work, whereas a PUB is rarely based on team work.

Take That says it well. If your medic dies, for example, there's a good chance you'll lose the round because the other team will have uber and you won't.

I know we're not taking it seriously, but would just like to point out for the people with classes listed like engineer, medic, it's pretty much always a scout that does the class changing, definitely not the medic =)

Yeah, if a team is good enough it's possible to take out the entire team with a single uber. Entire team dead is almost an instant win. With pubs there will almost certainly be someone around but 6vs6 makes it much more exciting.

You might have steam urls disabled. Make sure you allow Firefox to open another program (steam) with a link. If that doesn't work, you can always get the info from the left hand side of the page that opens after that. It shows the IP and password for the match. So you can paste into console in TF2
Code: Select all
connect IP;password pass

to get in.

As for a server to play on, it's too bad the "CSn Match" server is so horrible (because it hosts this website and tf2ware and trading at once). Perhaps we can get another server from discount gameservers for tf2lobby matches at some point (assuming we have the cash of course).

Is your server a self-hosted thing, or paid? Really anything would probably be better than the one we have now (it's just bogged down from crunching hlstatsx, tf2ware, trading, left4dead etc). We can give it a shot. Would need only 12 slots, but 18 would be ideal. We could also contact the tf2lobby people and get it listed in the pool so that it's automatically selected, though if we did that we wouldn't guarantee its use by critsandvich people (but we could get the word out with the MOTD).

In any case that sounds like it could work out nicely.

Self-hosted. That said, does it need to be added to the pool, or can we set it for use whenever we want?

I say this because of a few things:
I use it every now and again for playing CS:S (as a noob) with a friend and bots, however I know that it can run multiple instances of srcds on one machine, so that isn't that large of an issue
It does not have a static IP. It does not change much, but it does change on occasion and I tend to use its dynamic DNS setup anyway.

At any rate, I'll see about installing it on a separate user account for you Benny so you can SSH into it.

Ah, in that case, no need to add it to the pool. You can put the IP in right before using it.

Sounds like fun. If it's the super serious 2scout 2solly med/demo setup then count me in for a soldier sometime.

If it's highlander, I play a mean heavy and pyro. Anything but sniper and scout!

Edit: After exploring the website, I really wish I was at home and playing. The tracking and team making looks like it could be really fun.

Cool! I have about 30 or so lobbies, so I'd love to be spy. I have a tight schedule but I'll be there as often as possible.
I deal ¹º² Damage with my favorite gun.
I also spend way to much time on the forum.

I'd actually love to see this. Personally, I could do Soldier, Medic, Demo, or...... bah, put me down for anything. I suck equally at all classes, so this would be really good practice.
