First video of my game

by Vivi Hill » Sat Jul 09, 2011 1:04 am

Here's a dev video of the game I'm making. It's just a very early test so don't get all worked up about anything.

My game

Let me know what you think. No, it's not obvious what it is. Things will improve in time.

Very nice Benny. My only improvement would be to add hats.

I think it looks pretty cool, and second that you should add unlockable hats for your ship.

Is it considered rude of me to post a video of my game here while we're on the topic?

Yeah I've gotten several requests for HATS. It's on my to-do list.

No, Tech, go ahead :D

Here's some footage I have lying around from our late beta phase

Hopefully your game won't take as long to make as mine did Benny; after the 3rd year it just started getting tiring.

Has anyone besides Benny and I ever worked on a game? I'd love to hear/see some of your work.

here's some final gameplay footage from one of our fans if you're interested

You guys are so much cooler than the rest of us! :D

I'm curious. Do you have degrees toward game design or is this just a hobby?

Yeah, that's why I'm starting with a 2D game. I figure it'll be a bit easier to finish. Once it's done I can assess the experience of making it and see if it was worthwhile. Also, 2d games can reach 'playable' status much sooner than 3d games can, I think. I'm hoping my game won't take too long to finish. I'm not going to make any predictions though as I'm sure it'll take longer than I'm expecting.

I'm not majoring in game dev because I figure it's not a very good field to go into. I am doing Computer Science now though. However none of my work in games has been work for a course, I consider it just a hobby.

I can't speak for Benny, but I think any formal study of game design would take all the fun out of it for me. 3.3

I've made a few small flash games. One's a falling block puzzle game that you could actually play here: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/542448
I'm gonna release my second July 16th, I hope. I'd explain it, but it's kind of complicated.

Fun game. Music C was my favorite!

I got 10200 on my 2nd try; how's that score-wise?

Well right now nothing is programmed to happen, but they will eventually sap your ammo if you're too close.

Actually, yes, I used to work on a video game. A futuristic turn-based RPG based on the great philosophy game Xenosaga. ^^

But I gave up the project eventually after suffering from many critical system errors. For my tests, I used music from many copyrighted sources, especially the Megaman Zero games. I had a song for the

Title Screen/dark moments

Megaman Zero 2: X, The Legend

Normal enemy encounters

MegaMan Zero~Zero's Theme

Boss fights

Megaman Zero 4 Falling Down Remix

I like how Zero dies. He swore to never kill any human being, but, in the end, he is forced to kill one to save the few hundreds of human beings still alive on Earth. I believe the final battle was some kind of kamikaze for him; he never intended to survive his first murder... Oh well.

Your game seems quite interesting Benny. Yours too, Tech. It's just I don't fully understand what's happening in neither of them. xD

Heh, don't worry. My game is still very new, just a month or so of work. There's really no gameplay at all yet. I'm sure things will clear up once I've gotten a bit further. Since I made this video I've added colors to the bullets, too. Next step is adding ammo usage and perhaps some different guns. Also, in this test mode I didn't attach the camera to the player, which makes it a bit more confusing (and I'm spawning the enemies by hand instead of automatically).

I just joined... and now I feel small and miserable to the amount of talent I've just seen. Oh, and great job Benny :P Question though, does the game have a point yet?

It's sometimes amazing how difficult it is to make what should be a simple game. There are always cases you never think about, and difficult bits you get stuck on. Except for Pong. Pong is pretty much the easiest graphical game you can do. A good first project, actually.

Thread bumping time! I made a lot of visual changes to my game in the past couple days, as a self-reward for fixing the various crashes and adding features. Made some stuff in Inkscape to make the cells and things more visually interesting. I also have added some things that make the code almost a game.

Image
Image
Image
Image

  • Dispensers -- These things are breeding grounds for the cells. When they attach they slurp up resources and start multiplying. They regenerate when not being eaten by the cells.
  • The "Hook" tool -- This is a sort of gravity gun for the cells. You can pick them up and drag them to dispensers or try to make them fight.
  • The "Master" cell -- This bad boy appears once the cell count is greater than 3. Right now it's just a size change, but in the future cell clusters with a master cell will regenerate faster, and be harder to destroy (take multiple hits).
  • Gun -- This fires small pellets at the cells, destroying them upon a hit. You choose a color and if the color does not match the cell is not destroyed. Takes resources (see the bars on the bottom).
  • Energy Nodes -- These things drop when a cell is destroyed, and are a means of recharging your ammo supply.

These shots were taken in Windows (the code builds in Windows and Linux at the moment). I'll try to make a good video with Fraps or something now that the code runs on my fast computer.

And a video:

Wow, Benny, that looks really cool. I still have no idea what's going on, but it still seems very promising :D

Also, being someone who has absolutely no experience in coding, graphical design, etc., I am still interested in learning how to make games. The only thing is I have no idea where to even start. What sort of advice could you offer a complete noob like myself?

Very cool, I wasn't around when this was originally posted. I do hobby game development myself, even had a submission to (student) GDC a while back. Out of curiosity, what engine are you using? Most of my stuff was in Torque and self-baked 2D XNA engines.
